How to practise English conversation alone

English conversation practice without a partner is possible because a recorded dialogue gives you both sides. You take one, then the other, and speak every line out loud.

  • Take one speaker's lines for the whole clip, then run it again as the other person.
  • Keep the short reactions: right, no way, for real. English conversation runs on them and they are what you freeze on.
  • Come in on time. Answering half a second late is what makes a fluent speaker sound hesitant.
  • Shadow the questions too. A question that lands flat reads as an interrogation, and the intonation is the whole difference.

What real dialogue gives you

These are recordings of people talking to each other, not scripts read aloud, which is why the English on this page sounds nothing like a textbook dialogue.

  • Overlapping turns and interruptions, the part of spoken English that listening exercises usually remove.
  • Contractions and connected speech in every line.
  • Short answers and everyday phrases you can reuse in your next real conversation.
  • A beginner set, for A1 and A2, if the pace here is still too fast.
