  158. If you have to watch everyone else's vlog.5:33
  159. I just watched it back.5:35
  160. I'll have you.5:36
  161. I walked in and I first thing outside, Alphie was like, you go first.5:39
  162. And I was like, right, like you're never like, like you're never like, like cautious.5:45
  163. And I was like, okay.5:50
  164. I have had absolutely no idea.5:54
  165. Like at all, not at all.5:57
  166. And I've been texting my Anant and Jonathan like, oh, what are you guys up to today?5:59
  167. Cause obviously we had Mark's day and me and Poppy and Sean's day for last night.6:02
  168. I was kind of saying, I'm like, oh, you don't want to spend your day with them.6:06
  169. Throw you off.6:10
  170. Like, no, don't, don't do anything with us.6:11
  171. Just stay with that puppy.6:14
  172. And then apparently at breakfast.6:15
  173. You weren't even surprised.6:18
  174. I was like, I don't know, we're going for lunch.6:19
  175. I've put it to already.6:20
  176. And then I said, oh, Mark's not with me.6:21
  177. You're like, Mark's not with me.6:22
  178. You're coming.6:23
  179. Yeah.6:24
  180. I was even like surprised that he put to learn.6:24
  181. And then apparently at breakfast, Mark has said, oh, do you think Anant and Jonathan will bring their dogs today?6:27
  182. Mark has said that.6:34
  183. And then apparently everyone around the table was like, but I, cause I've been texting Anant and Jonathan like, oh yeah, pop around tonight.6:38
  184. So I just thought, oh, that's probably what he means.6:46
  185. But no, I honestly had no idea.6:49
  186. This is so cool.6:52
  187. Look at this room.6:54

  194. I've never known what's wrong.7:15
  195. I haven't had anything to eat yet.7:19

  202. How long?7:34
  203. It's a couple of weeks.7:35
  204. A couple of weeks.7:37
  205. Everyone just seemed to be free.7:37
  206. I didn't think people would be free.7:39
  207. It was quite late notice.7:40
  208. Aw.7:42
  209. I have to pay everyone.7:43
  210. Aw, I'm so happy.7:46
  211. Are we saying to Alfie this is the best birthday ever?7:49

  226. Yeah, I screwed up.8:09
  227. I'm going to leave now.8:10
  228. Jay got back at 3am last night.8:12
  229. I did this for you.8:14
  230. Aw.8:15
  231. So I didn't want to sleep on the floor.8:16
  232. But I did this for you.8:17
  233. Because you didn't want to what?8:19
  234. Sleep on the floor.8:20
  235. You get cakes instead.8:22
  236. Yeah, I know.8:24
  237. I'm happy about that.8:24
  238. I'm going to go this cake to the 12th.8:25
  239. Oh, the Battenberg.8:28
  240. Are you far away?8:30
  241. See, I don't really like marzipan, so Battenbergs are not.8:32
  242. Well, the stuff around the outside is marzipan.8:35
  243. And it's like almond flavour, isn't it?8:37
  244. Do you like almonds?8:40
  245. Is that a knot?8:41
  246. Yeah.8:43
  247. I don't like nuts, but I'm going to try it.8:47
  248. Yeah, but you're going to learn your lesson.8:49
  249. Safe life.8:51
  250. Never taking the safety nets out of a trampoline or something.8:54
  251. Is that what you were talking about?8:57

  254. Oh, yeah.9:03
  255. Can you imagine?9:04

  258. I'm just not hungry.9:10
  259. The burgers look insane.9:12
  260. Hold up your burger, Jay.9:14

  263. That's the big old boy.9:17
  264. Yeah.9:19
  265. We can eat the stick here.9:20
  266. Oh, and then it stays together.9:22
  267. Just make sure you don't eat the stick.9:24
  268. You all right, Casper?9:26
  269. I'm so worried about the sticks in there.9:27
  270. Why did you think that?9:29
  271. I just know it falls out.9:30
  272. What?9:32
  273. Isn't that a stick?9:32
  274. What are you two laughing at?9:35
  275. Your only answer is the most obvious thing in the world.9:38
  276. What have you got, Anna?9:43
  277. Go go, she's had it.9:44
  278. Oh, nice and healthy.9:46
  279. That's why I'm so happy to be here.9:48
  280. I'm sorry for being a little scarred.9:51

  285. No, I don't.10:00
  286. Have you tried it before?10:02
  287. I love angelities.10:03
  288. Alfie loves them.10:04
  289. I don't like them.10:05
  290. Look how slimy they are.10:07
  291. That one is green with the wine.10:08
  292. I still like to watch that sometimes.10:10
  293. I feel like I just want to film my friends.10:12
  294. I'm just going to zoom in.10:15
  295. You've been there as well?10:17
  296. Yeah.10:18
  297. This is an ice cream, by the way.10:21
  298. It's cream.10:23
  299. It looks like ice cream.10:25
  300. But it's not molten.10:26
  301. I've managed to zoom right into your eye, Joe.10:27
  302. So this is a game that me and Joe used to play.10:31
  303. It's really hard.10:33
  304. You look like a new streamer.10:36
  305. How did you...10:40
  306. I tried it.10:41
  307. I tried it.10:44
  308. Try and do the lip sync.10:44
  309. Oh, God.10:49
  310. I'm crying.10:52
  311. Oh, God.10:53
  312. You don't have to cry in your lap.10:57
  313. Ow.10:59
  314. I want to see them squouch out.11:01
  315. Huh?11:06
  316. Oh, my God.11:08
  317. Do you know who you look like?11:09
  318. You know in Jumanji when the boy turns into a monkey?11:10

  332. Oh, my God.11:45
  333. Oh, my God.11:47
  334. Oh, my God.11:48
  335. Oh, my God.11:49
  336. I've got three traits.11:50
  337. So you may have noticed when I came in, I had all my friends here, but there was one very special person missing, and I had already texted her during11:52
  338. the day.12:00
  339. That might be a big clue.12:02
  340. And I already texted her during the day, like, when will I see you?12:04
  341. And she was like, oh, it will be soon.12:07
  342. It's me.12:08
  343. No, because I didn't know this was happening.12:08
  344. So when you were like, are you coming tomorrow?12:15
  345. And I was like, oh, yeah.12:16
  346. I didn't know I've got bills to sort out.12:17
  347. No, I just understood.12:19
  348. Oh, she'll be annoyed.12:20
  349. No, no.12:24
  350. I think I've really annoyed her.12:25
  351. No, you had a talk.12:27
  352. No, I didn't.12:28
  353. What are you doing?12:30
  354. I can see you trying not to laugh.12:33
  355. Oh, you give me a big birthday hug.12:39
  356. What's she doing?12:43
  357. Oh.12:45
  358. Well, that failed.13:00
  359. Ha!13:03
  360. Ha, ha, ha.13:03
  361. That's me.13:06
  362. That's me.13:08
  363. I'm so good at this.13:11
  364. Sorry, I know it's your birthday, but just calm down, all right?13:12
  365. You've had too much cake, haven't they?13:15
  366. Come on, you've had too much fizzy.13:16
  367. You've had way too much fizzy pop, you have.13:18
  368. Oh, my God.13:20
  369. Watch this.13:22
  370. Is it a foil?13:23
  371. How am I going to do it?13:24
  372. I've done it quite the most sensible once in my life.13:26
  373. Good job, Sean.13:29
  374. Do that one and that one.13:30
  375. You want to see it?13:33
  376. Darcy, are you excited?13:34
  377. I'm going to have to climb back once now.13:37
  378. You have to do it more quickly.13:38
  379. Don't burn the side a bit.13:40
  380. Tough bit.13:41
  381. Whoa!13:42
  382. Oh.13:44
  383. That's okay.13:45
  384. That was way better than I expected.13:48

A British birthday vlog for everyday english conversation practice

This clip is a slice of British daily life: a birthday morning caught on camera as it happens. Voices overlap, a dog barks at balloons, and friends drop in and out of frame calling out "Happy birthday Zoe." Nobody here is reading from a script, which is exactly what makes it useful english speaking practice: the words come out at the speed of a real conversation, not a classroom recording.

At B1 and 220 words per minute, faster than 78 percent of the catalogue, this is not a slow clip. People talk over each other, react, and change the subject mid thought, the way a British english conversation practice clip needs to if it is going to prepare you for an actual conversation rather than a rehearsed one.

British accent pronunciation practice: the phrasing in this birthday scene

Three lines from the opening are worth slowing down for before you try the whole scene at speed.

  • "This morning, Alphie gave me a cuddle and he went, you feel different." The phrase "he went" is doing the job of reporting speech here, a casual substitute that only sounds natural at full pace. Reading it silently teaches you nothing about how it actually lands out loud.
  • "Is this a rainbow cake Alfie?" The question runs straight through with no pause before the name, the pitch rising right on "cake". Say it a few times and listen for where your own voice wants to rise.
  • "That's the whole point." Three flat, stressed words with no reduction at all, the kind of short idiomatic reply British speakers drop into conversation constantly. Isolating a line this short is a good way to build fluency before tackling longer ones.
  • Later in the clip there is also one instance of "going to" reduced down to "gonna", the kind of reduction that is easy to miss on the page and only becomes obvious once you shadow this line aloud.

How to shadow this B1 clip, line by line

This clip rewards working through a few lines closely before you shadow this line for line straight through at full pace.

  • Start with "That's the whole point." on its own. Three words, no reductions, easy to repeat until the rhythm is automatic.
  • Move to "Is this a rainbow cake Alfie?" and shadow it as one breath group, matching the rise into "Alfie" rather than pausing before it.
  • Take "This morning, Alphie gave me a cuddle and he went, you feel different." in two halves: the setup up to "cuddle", then the reported speech starting at "and he went". Join the two once each half feels natural alone.
  • Once those three lines are solid, run the opening stretch straight through at full pace, matching the 220 words per minute speed instead of slowing the clip down.
  • Come back the next day and redo just those three lines before moving further into the video. Repeating a short, chosen set of lines improves english speaking fluency faster than one pass over a longer stretch.
