You understand English. You just can't speak it.

Repeat a line. See which words landed and which did not.

The SpeakFox practice screen: a line from a film with a pronunciation score above every word, and a card breaking the word 'ridiculous' into syllables.

How it works

Listen. Repeat.
Get scored.

One loop, five minutes a day.

01Pick

A video you'd watch anyway

Steve Jobs speeches, Friends, TED talks, JENNIE. Real accents in real context, not scripted textbook audio.

02Speak

Say the line out loud

Short segments, one at a time. Listen to the native speaker, then shadow it in your own voice.

03Fix

See exactly which words missed

Every word comes back with a score and the syllable you got wrong. Try again until it's green.

What's inside

Feedback on what you said, not on what you recognized.

A scored line: every word carries its own accuracy number, and a card shows the word 'ridiculous' split into syllables against the learner's attempt.

A score on every word, not a mark on the line

Say the line and it comes back scored against the native speaker. The words that missed show the exact syllable that slipped, so you know what to change before the next try.

  • Accuracy, fluency and completeness, per line and per word
  • Your recording and the native audio, back to back
  • Retry the same line until it comes back green
A JENNIE music video in the app, with a choice between Watch (listen along) and Shadow (speak and score).

Watch, or shadow. Your call

Some days you want to listen along. Some days you want to work. Switch between the two on any clip, at any line.

  • Auto-scroll that follows the speaker
  • Repeat a single line as many times as you need
  • Slow a segment down until you catch it
Bilingual subtitles: an English line from a Steve Jobs speech with the Spanish translation underneath.

Bilingual subtitles, so nothing is a guess

Every line in English with your own language underneath. Understand first, then say it. That order is what makes shadowing work.

The method

The method interpreters train on.

Shadowing is standard practice for simultaneous interpreters, and the only part of language learning that trains your mouth instead of your eyes.

01The technique

Repeat before you translate

You hear a native speaker and repeat immediately, matching their rhythm, stress and intonation before your own accent gets in the way. It works at every level. The only thing that changes is which clips you practice on.

02The missing half

Knowing you got it right

Shadowing alone can't tell you whether you actually matched the speaker, and a mistake you repeat is a mistake you learn. Scoring every word is what gives the practice a direction.

Questions

Before you download

What is shadowing, exactly?

You listen to a short piece of native speech and repeat it out loud almost immediately, copying the speaker's rhythm, stress and intonation rather than translating word by word. It is a standard training method for professional interpreters, and it is the fastest way to turn English you understand into English you can say.

Do I need to be advanced to use it?

No. Videos are labeled by level, from beginner to advanced, and you can slow any segment down. Shadowing works at every level. The difference is only which clips you practice on.

How is the pronunciation score calculated?

Your recording is compared against native pronunciation and scored on accuracy, fluency and completeness, for the whole line and for each individual word. Words that miss show the syllable that went wrong.

Can I use the app in my own language?

Yes. The interface is available in 16 languages, and subtitles show English with your language underneath.

Is it free?

You can practice up to 15 lines a day for free, with the full video catalog and bilingual subtitles, including a few AI-scored lines each day. Pro removes the daily limit and scores every line.

Is it on Android?

Not yet. SpeakFox is iPhone only for now.
