Shadowing practice: Surprising Alfie

This clip is a British YouTuber talking straight to camera on a Sunday morning: what day it is, her skin, secret things in her office she is not allowed to show, a visit from her nanny and granddad, and prints she bought by the beach. It sits at B1 and moves at 146 words per minute, which is faster than most of the catalogue, so it is genuinely useful english speaking practice for someone past the beginner stage.

It is worth practising for the accent as much as the content. This is an unscripted British voice rambling the way people actually ramble, so it works well as british english pronunciation practice: real hesitation, real self correction, no autocue smoothing the sentences out first.

A few lines carry the whole texture of casual spoken English. Quote them out loud before you shadow the full clip, because each one hides a different habit of speech.

• "I lose track of the time." is short and clean, a good line to isolate the rhythm on before anything faster.

Work through the opening in order rather than jumping around. This clip rewards a slow first pass because the sentences run long before they pause.

• Start with line 1, "Good morning everybody!", just to get the greeting's pitch and pace before anything harder arrives.
• Take "I lose track of the time." next and repeat it five times, matching stress on "lose" and "track", before moving on.
