  11. Hi, everyone.1:38
  12. My name is Sarah and I'm happy to share my daily routine with you.1:40
  13. I usually get up at around six more in the morning.1:45
  14. The first thing I do is turn off my alarm and then I stretch in bed for a few minutes.1:48
  15. After that, I get out of bed and go to the bathroom to have a shower.1:53
  16. After my shower, I dry myself and get dressed.1:59
  17. I usually choose comfortable clothes for the day.2:02
  18. Then I go downstairs to the kitchen and make breakfast.2:06
  19. I usually have a bowl of oatmeal with fruit and a cup of tea.2:09
  20. While I eat breakfast, I often read the news on my phone.2:13
  21. After breakfast, I wash the dishes and tidy up the kitchen.2:18
  22. Then I brush my teeth and put on a little makeup.2:23
  23. Around 7 .30 a .m., I leave the house to go to work.2:27
  24. I usually take the bus, which takes about 30 minutes.2:32
  25. I arrive at work at 8 a .m.2:36
  26. and start working immediately.2:39
  27. I usually work on my computer and attend meetings throughout the morning.2:41
  28. Around 12 o 'clock, I have lunch with my colleagues in the cafeteria.2:47
  29. We usually chat and relax during our lunch break.2:52
  30. After lunch, I go back to work and continue my tasks until 5 o 'clock.2:56
  31. When I finish work, I go back home by bus.3:02
  32. Sometimes, if the weather is nice, I walk home.3:07
  33. When I get home, I usually feel tired, so I relax on the sofa for a while.3:12
  34. Sometimes, my friend comes over and we talk or watch a movie.3:18
  35. Other times, I cook dinner for myself.3:24
  36. I like to eat dinner around 7 .30 p .m.3:27
  37. After dinner, I usually wash the dishes again and then I might read a book or watch some TV.3:31
  38. Before bed, I always brush my teeth again and get ready for bed.3:39
  39. I usually go to bed around 10 or 10 .30 p .m.3:43
  40. That's pretty much my daily routine.3:47
  41. Wow, that was Sarah's day.3:54
  42. What a routine.3:57
  43. Yeah, that's a busy day.3:58
  44. I liked how she started, Hi everyone, my name is Sarah, and I'm happy to share my daily routine with you.4:01
  45. It's a nice, simple way to introduce yourself and what you're going to talk about.4:09
  46. Very clear.4:14
  47. Absolutely.4:15
  48. And then she immediately jumps into the morning, saying, I usually get up at around 6 in the morning.4:17
  49. This phrase, get up, is super common for waking up and getting out of bed.4:24
  50. We use it all the time.4:30
  51. Right.4:32
  52. And notice she says, at around 6.4:33
  53. That around is useful.4:37
  54. It means not exactly 6, maybe 5 minutes before or 5 minutes after.4:39
  55. It's an approximation.4:46
  56. Good word to know.4:47
  57. Yes.4:49
  58. And what's the very first thing she does?4:50
  59. The first thing I do is turn off my alarm.4:52
  60. The alarm clock, that's a universal experience, isn't it?4:56
  61. Turn off means to make it stop, like turning off the light.5:00
  62. Yep, that noisy alarm.5:05
  63. And then she says, And then I stretch in bed for a few minutes.5:07
  64. Oh, I love that.5:12
  65. Stretching is great.5:14
  66. Stretch means to extend your body, make it long.5:16
  67. It feels good.5:20
  68. Yes, it does.5:21
  69. And then after that, I get out of bed.5:23
  70. So get up is waking up and get out of bed is physically leaving the bed.5:27
  71. Two different but related actions.5:34
  72. Exactly.5:36
  73. And she goes to the bathroom to have a shower.5:38
  74. We say have a shower or take a shower.5:41
  75. Both are correct and very common.5:44
  76. Okay, so after her shower, Sarah says, I dry myself and get dressed.5:46
  77. So dry myself means to use a towel, right?5:53
  78. And get dressed is to put on clothes.5:57
  79. Simple but important actions.6:00
  80. Yeah.6:03
  81. And she says, I usually choose comfortable clothes for the day.6:03
  82. Good choice, Sarah.6:09
  83. Comfort is key.6:10
  84. Choose means to pick, to select and comfortable means feeling good, not tight, not itchy.6:12
  85. Definitely.6:19
  86. Then I go downstairs to the kitchen and make breakfast.6:20
  87. Go downstairs means going to a lower floor in a house and make breakfast is to prepare food for breakfast.6:25
  88. You can also say, cook breakfast or prepare breakfast.6:34
  89. Oh, and her breakfast.6:38
  90. I usually have a bowl of oatmeal with fruit and a cup of tea.6:40
  91. Mmm sounds healthy.6:45
  92. Have here means to eat or drink.6:47
  93. So you can have breakfast, have lunch, have dinner, and a bowl of oatmeal.6:50
  94. Oatmeal is a type of hot cereal made from oats, very common breakfast food.6:56
  95. Yes, very common.7:01
  96. And while I eat breakfast, I often read the news on my phone.7:03
  97. While means at the same time.7:08
  98. So eating and reading the news simultaneously.7:11
  99. And on my phone, we often say on for electronic devices when we're using them for information, like on the internet, on my computer, after breakfast, she says, I wash7:15
  100. the dishes and tidy up the kitchen.7:28
  101. Important chores.7:32
  102. Wash the dishes is to clean the plates, cups, and forks.7:33
  103. And tidy up means to make a place neat and organized, like putting things back in their place.7:37
  104. Yes, tidy up is a great phrase.7:44
  105. You can tidy up a room, tidy up your desk.7:47
  106. Then I brush my teeth and put on a little makeup.7:50
  107. Brush my teeth is for oral hygiene.7:53
  108. Very important.7:55
  109. And put on makeup means to apply cosmetics to your face.7:57
  110. Right.8:01
  111. And then around 730, I leave the house to go to work.8:01
  112. So leave the house is to exit your home.8:07
  113. And to go to work is her destination.8:11
  114. And how does she get there?8:14
  115. I usually take the bus, which takes about 30 minutes.8:16
  116. So take the bus means to use the bus as transport.8:21
  117. And takes about 30 minutes tells us the duration of the trip.8:25
  118. Takes here is about time.8:31
  119. That's a good point, Paul.8:34
  120. We often use take when talking about how long something lasts.8:35
  121. For example, the movie takes two hours.8:40
  122. So Sarah arrives at work.8:43
  123. I arrive at work at eight and start working immediately.8:45
  124. Arrived means to reach a place.8:49
  125. And start working immediately means she begins her tasks right away with no delay.8:52
  126. Wow, she's very prompt.8:57
  127. She is.8:59
  128. And she says, I usually work on my computer and attend meetings throughout the morning.9:00
  129. So work on my computer means she uses her computer for work tasks.9:06
  130. And attend meetings means to go to and participate in meetings.9:12
  131. Throughout the morning means all during the morning from beginning to end.9:18
  132. Good phrase throughout.9:22
  133. And then around 12, I have lunch with my colleagues in the cafeteria.9:25
  134. Again, have lunch meaning to eat lunch.9:30
  135. And colleagues are people you work with, your co -workers.9:33
  136. And a cafeteria is a place where you can buy and eat food, usually in a workplace or school.9:37
  137. Yes.9:43
  138. And what do they do during lunch?9:44
  139. We usually chat and relax during our lunch break.9:47
  140. Chat means to talk in a friendly, informal way.9:51
  141. And relax means to rest and feel calm.9:55
  142. A lunch break is a period of time during the work day when you stop working to eat lunch.9:59
  143. After lunch, I go back to work and continue my tasks until five.10:05
  144. Go back to work means she returns to her job.10:10
  145. And continue my tasks means she keeps doing her work responsibilities.10:13
  146. Tasks are duties or pieces of work that need to be done.10:18
  147. And then when I finish work, I go back home by bus.10:21
  148. Finish work means to complete your work for the day.10:27
  149. And go back home is to return to your house.10:30
  150. She still takes the bus.10:34
  151. Yes.10:36
  152. But then she says, sometimes if the weather is nice, I walk home.10:37
  153. Ah, a little change of pace.10:42
  154. If the weather is nice means if it's sunny and pleasant outside.10:44
  155. And walk home means she goes home on foot, not by bus.10:48
  156. That's a great option if the weather is good.10:53
  157. I like that.10:55
  158. So when I get home, I usually feel tired.10:56
  159. So I relax on the sofa for a while.11:00
  160. Oh, I can relate to that.11:04
  161. Get home means to arrive at her house.11:06
  162. And feel tired is how she feels sleepy without energy.11:09
  163. So she relax on the sofa.11:14
  164. She rests on the couch for a while means for a short period of time.11:16
  165. Yep, that's me after work.11:23
  166. And then she has some social time.11:25
  167. Sometimes my friend comes over and we talk or watch a movie.11:28
  168. Comes over means a friend visits her at her house.11:33
  169. And talk or watch a movie are common activities with friends.11:37
  170. Yes, very nice.11:42
  171. And other times, I cook dinner for myself.11:44
  172. So cook dinner means to prepare the evening meal.11:48
  173. And for myself means she cooks only for her, no one else.11:52
  174. She likes to eat dinner around 7 30.11:58
  175. Again, around for an approximate time.12:02
  176. After dinner, I usually wash the dishes again.12:05
  177. Ah, yes, the dishes again.12:09
  178. And then I might read a book or watch some TV might here means maybe it's a possibility.12:11
  179. So she might do one or the other or both.12:19
  180. Yes, might is a good word for possibilities.12:23
  181. And before bed, I always brush my teeth again and get ready for bed.12:26
  182. So another brushing of the teeth, good dental hygiene, Sarah, and get ready for bed means to prepare to go to sleep, like putting on pajamas.12:33
  183. And finally, I usually go to bed around 10 or 10 30.12:45
  184. Go to bed means to go to sleep.12:50
  185. And she gives a range of times 10 or 10 30.12:52
  186. And then that's pretty much my daily routine.12:57
  187. Pretty much means almost mostly.13:00
  188. So that covers most of her typical day.13:04
  189. What a great summary of a day.13:07
  190. Sarah's routine is so clear.13:09
  191. And she used so many common English phrases we use every single day.13:12
  192. Agreed.13:16
  193. It's fantastic for learners because it's a real life example.13:17
  194. We heard so many verbs related to actions.13:21
  195. Get up, turn off, stretch, get out of bed, have a shower, dry myself, get dressed, go downstairs, make breakfast, wash the dishes, tidy up, brush my teeth, put on13:24
  196. makeup, leave the house, take the bus, arrive at work, start working, attend meetings, have lunch, go back to work, finish work, get home, relax, comes over, talk, watch a13:37
  197. movie, cook dinner, read a book, get ready for bed, go to bed.13:51
  198. That's a lot.13:58
  199. Phew, that's a lot.14:00
  200. But that's how we talk about our days.14:01
  201. Now let's listen to Sarah's routine one more time.14:04
  202. And this time, try to really focus on the words and phrases we just discussed.14:07

Everyday English Speaking Practice With an A2 American Podcast Duo

This clip opens with two co hosts, Emily and Paul, welcoming listeners to Mr. English Channel before they hand the story over to a beginner level narration from "Sarah" about her daily routine. The recording sits at A2, so the sentences stay short and the vocabulary sticks to everyday actions: getting up, getting dressed, catching the bus to work. At 171 words per minute the pace is quicker than most of the catalogue, which makes this a useful test for american accent training even at a beginner level, and a good pick for daily english conversation practice since two speakers trade turns throughout.

Because the whole clip is built around routine, it repeats the same handful of structures with new details each time. You hear a pattern once in the hosts' chat, then Sarah reuses a close version of it, and by the third repeat you can predict most of the sentence before it finishes, which is exactly what makes an A2 shadowing clip like this one work.

English Shadowing Practice for A2 Learners: Sarah's Morning Routine Lines

"So happy to be here with you all today." from Paul's welcome is a good line to warm up on, it is short and upbeat, with the stress falling hard on "happy" and "today". Sarah's line "I usually get up at around six more in the morning." shows how a beginner speaker opens a sentence with "usually" before naming the action, a pattern she repeats through the rest of the clip. "After that, I get out of bed and go to the bathroom to have a shower." strings three actions together with plain connectors, "after that", "and", "to", which is the exact shape you need to describe your own day out loud and improve your english accent on everyday vocabulary.

  • "So happy to be here with you all today." Practise the stress on "happy" and "today" before moving on.
  • "I usually get up at around six more in the morning." Notice how "usually" opens the sentence to mark a routine.
  • "After that, I get out of bed and go to the bathroom to have a shower." Say the three actions as one breath group, the way Sarah does.

How to Work Through Sarah's Routine: A Step by Step Order for Practising English Speaking

Start at the top of the episode rather than jumping straight to Sarah's story, the hosts' introduction is slower and gives you a run in before the pace picks up. Once you reach Sarah's narration, work line by line instead of sentence group by sentence group, this clip rewards patience because the routine keeps opening new sentences with "usually" and a fresh activity attached each time. By the time you reach "I usually have a bowl of oatmeal with fruit and a cup of tea." the rhythm should already feel familiar from the earlier "usually" lines, and that repeated familiarity inside one clip does more for fluency than switching to a new video every few lines.

  • Shadow lines 1 to 9 first, the hosts' introduction, to get used to the pace before Sarah starts.
  • Move to line 25, "I usually get up at around six more in the morning.", and repeat it until the opening "usually" feels automatic.
  • Chain lines 26 to 28 together, the getting up and shower actions, as one continuous turn.
  • Finish on line 31, "I usually have a bowl of oatmeal with fruit and a cup of tea.", and compare its rhythm back to line 25.
