A slow American conversation built for A2 English speaking practice
This clip is a podcast style chat between two hosts, Emily and Paul, and it is one of the slower recordings in the catalogue at 128 words per minute. That matters if you are still building confidence: at A2 level you need the extra half second between words to hear the shape of a sentence before you try to say it back.
The two hosts trade short greetings, ask how the other is feeling, then pivot into the actual topic of the episode, which is how to stop translating in your head and start thinking directly in English. Nothing here is scripted narration read at speed. It is two people talking to each other, which is exactly the rhythm daily English conversation practice needs to sound like.
What the opening lines of this A2 chat actually teach you
The transcript is worth slowing down for because the grammar stays simple while the intonation does real work. Compare the two questions Emily asks Paul early on.
- "How are you today, Paul?" and later "And you, Emily?" show how a question shrinks once the topic is already shared. You do not need the full sentence every time, and hearing where English drops words is part of learning to pronounce English words the way a native speaker actually strings them together.
- "I am very happy today" and "I am also happy" repeat the same frame with one word swapped. That repetition is the clip teaching you a pattern in real time, not padding.
- "I think in my language" followed by "Then I translate in my head" and "Then I speak the English word" lays out, in three short lines, the exact three step process the whole episode is trying to shorten to one step. Say all three back to back and you feel how heavy that process sounds.
- "Look, I have a pen" then "I think this is my pen" is the same trick again: a plain fact, then the fuller thought behind it. Shadow this line pair and you are practising the jump from noticing something to describing it.
A line by line order for shadowing this podcast opening
Work through the introduction in order rather than jumping to the topic. The lines build on each other, so skipping ahead loses the pattern.
- Start with lines 4 to 9, the hello exchange between Emily and Paul. These are short enough to repeat from memory after one listen, which is a good warm up for english shadowing practice at this level.
- Move to "The sun is shining" and "I like sunny days", two flat, even sentences that are easy to match for rhythm before you try anything longer.
- Isolate the three step sequence at "I think in my language", "Then I translate in my head", "Then I speak the English word" and repeat it as one block. Getting the connecting words right there teaches you more about how to speak English fluently than any single line on its own.
- Finish the opening with "Look, I have a pen" through "I think this is my pen" and try producing your own second sentence about an object near you, using the same frame.
- Repeat the whole opening once more at full speed. Because the pace here is well under the catalogue average, this is a realistic clip to use for daily practice if you are near the start of learning to think in English rather than translate it.
