Zoe Sugg's One Direction vlog: english speaking practice at 214 words a minute
This clip opens with Zoe Sugg explaining why her vlog starts with no intro, then she walks through being asked to interview One Direction and going to the This Is Us premiere. It moves from a solo monologue into a real back and forth once she reaches the press room, so one clip gives you both a rehearsed sounding opening and unscripted talk a few minutes later.
The transcript sits at B2, and the pace, 214 words per minute, is faster than 73 percent of the catalogue, so this is a genuine test of keeping up with a British speaker at natural speed rather than a slowed down teaching voice. It is a solid pick if your english speaking practice sessions have mostly used slower material and you want to push the pace up a level.
Because the accent is British throughout, it also works as british english pronunciation practice: long, rushed sentences sit right next to sudden two word reactions, so you hear the full range of how a fast, casual British speaker actually talks.
The colloquial turns in Zoe Sugg's lines: cues for everyday english
Three lines from the opening are worth slowing down on before you shadow this line by line at full speed.
- "there's two exclusive for more Zoella interview questions in this video": the grammar does not fully agree, "there's" sits in front of a plural, which is exactly how quick unscripted speech gets said out loud, not how a textbook would write it.
- "We're now in the press room, I'm really really excited": the doubled "really really" carries the stress and the rising energy of the line, so read it with that repetition emphasised rather than flattened out.
- "It's tilted.": a short, isolated reaction dropped into the middle of the vlog with no lead in, useful for practising a single stressed word on its own.
A line by line plan to shadow this vlog clip
Work through the opening in this order rather than jumping straight to full speed.
- Start with lines 1 and 2, the opening explanation, and shadow this line at a slower pace first, since it runs on as one long sentence before the first full stop.
- Move to "two seconds, probably less than that to say yes of course I would" and repeat it until you can say the whole thing in one breath at her speed.
- Take "thank you so much to all of you who have subscribed" next and focus on a warm, sincere tone rather than a flat reading.
- Once you reach the press room section, slow back down and treat lines 12 to 15 as shorter, more conversational speaking practice before you speed them back up.
- Finish on the two shortest lines, "It's tilted." and "Fail videos.", and drill them in isolation, since a two word line is where a mismatched stress pattern is most audible.
