Frozen at B1 pace: learn english with movies where the lines stay short

If you want to learn english with movies without drowning in speed, this Frozen scene is a sensible place to start. It is animated dialogue between two sisters at a child's register, and the level is B1. The recording is measured at 178 words per minute, faster than 42% of the catalogue, but most of that speed sits in the host's explanations rather than in the sisters' lines. Anna's half of the opening arrives four words at a time.

What happens: Anna wakes Elsa in the middle of the night, they fill the Great Hall with snow, Elsa loses control and hits Anna in the head, and the king carries her to the trolls in the forest. Then the register changes completely. The trolls speak in slow, weighted sentences: "The heart is not so easily changed." The clip runs to 253 lines, so it holds a week of english speaking practice, not one sitting.

Every voice here is American, including the host from Learn English With TV Series who stops between scenes to gloss the expressions. Three lines carry most of what is worth copying here, and each teaches something different about how to pronounce english words in american accent.

  • "The sky's awake." Anna squeezes sky is into one syllable, then leans the whole line on awake. The pitch climbs on the second syllable and falls off it. Keep the contraction or the rhythm of the joke collapses.
  • "So we have to play." Have to is not two clean words in this delivery. It runs together as hafta with one stress, and the sentence stress lands on play, not on we.
  • "But the head can be persuaded." Can is unstressed and reduces to something close to kuhn. Stress sits on head and on the second syllable of persuaded. Slow speech is still reduced speech, which is the useful surprise in the troll scenes.
  • "Anna, go back to sleep." Flat, tired, no lift at the end. Compare it with Anna's lines and you have the whole scene in two tones of voice.
