Practise English speaking with the Encanto sisters' argument scene
This clip is a two person conversation scene between Mirabel and Isabela from Encanto, which makes it useful for english speaking practice: real back and forth dialogue, not narration. It runs at 132 words per minute and sits at B2, quick enough to push you without losing the thread. The accent is American throughout.
What's happening: Mirabel forces a reconciliation hug, Isabela answers with sarcastic jabs about the family, the pair trade insults, and the fight cracks open into a real confession. That swing from stiff politeness to sarcasm to raw honesty gives you several distinct deliveries in one short recording, which is exactly what daily english conversation practice needs: not one flat tone repeated, but a range you can actually use.
The language in this scene: sarcasm and one long angry line
Isabela's sarcasm lands in short, deadpan lines, and her big confession lands in one long breathless run. Both are worth quoting out loud before you try to say them yourself.
- "Luisa can't lift an empanada." A flat, throwaway insult, said fast and without emphasis, the deadpan is the joke.
- "Mariano's nose looks like a smashed papaya." Same clipped delivery, listen for how little stress falls on "smashed".
- "That your life is so great." Four words turned sarcastic purely by tone, a good line for practising how pitch, not vocabulary, carries meaning.
- "I've been stuck being perfect my whole entire life, and literally the only thing you have ever done for me" One long line with no pause, said in a rising rush, exactly the kind of run on sentence that trips up learners aiming to speak english fluently.
How to work through this scene for b2 english shadowing practice
Work through the scene in the order the emotions shift, not just start to finish.
- Start on lines 5 and 6, "So we should just hug." and "Let's hug it out." Shadow this line pair first to catch the falsely bright tone before anything turns sarcastic.
- Move to lines 8 and 9, "Luisa can't lift an empanada." and "Mariano's nose looks like a smashed papaya." Say them back to back to get the clipped, deadpan rhythm.
- Isolate line 19, "Apologize for ruining my life." and repeat it until the stress on "ruining" comes out on its own, part of building an american accent for insults as well as compliments.
- Take line 25, "That your life is so great." alone, it is five words carrying the whole scene's sarcasm, a compact line for american accent training.
- Finish with line 32, the long confession line, breaking it into two breaths before running it whole at full speed, that is the real test of whether you can improve your english speaking pace on a line this long.
