Full transcript
- 3, 2, 1, WOW!0:00
- OH MY GOD!0:04
- When I was a kid, I had a globe on my desk.0:08
- And I used to love spinning it.0:11
- Close my eyes, point my fingers somewhere random, and then open them up to see where I landed.0:13
- Letting my imagination run free about what that country would be like and if I'd ever get to visit it.0:18
- And the answer was almost always that I'd probably never get to.0:24
- But 15 years have passed, and I've realized how life changing of an experience seeing other parts of the world and experiencing new cultures truly is.0:29
- So today, to leave it up to chance and throw ourselves into an unknown country, we've decided to live out this childhood fantasy.0:37
- To make this spin more specific, we've decided to rely on Google Maps's I'm Peeling Lucky feature, which spins the globe and truly sends you somewhere random, but also somewhere0:45
- very specific, unlike a finger on a globe would.0:55
- Matt and I are the ones going on this adventure because Amara's Egyptian passport requires him to have a visa for most countries, so unfortunately, a last minute trip isn't0:58

- possible for him.1:07
- And given that Matt hasn't been able to travel for months because of his Iron Man training, the hype to go on this trip was high.1:09
- The moment has come!1:16
- Thomas and I are gonna go spin the globe and go...1:17
- Yeah, yeah, yeah!1:20
- Oh my god.1:22
- This is the ultimate, I feel like, travel dream.1:23
- Just fully chance to decide where you go anywhere in the world.1:25
- You know when you're a kid, you dream of doing that?1:28
- Like, now we're actually gonna get to fly there.1:30
- Let's do it!1:32
- Alright.1:33
- Oh my god!1:34
- I am feeling lucky right here.1:35
- Whoa!1:37
- The power's in my hand!1:38
- Wait, so we're only doing one click and then we just fly there?1:40
- I think so, my friend.1:43
- I think so.1:44
- Phew!1:45
- Oh boy, it's actually shocking when you're cracking.1:46
- Three, two...1:49
- Wow!1:54
- Oh my god!1:55
- Yes!1:56
- Australia is so far, man!2:01
- You're the great barrier reef.2:03
- We've never been.2:04
- No, I know.2:05
- We've never been.2:06
- I'm aware, I'm aware.2:07
- This is like a dream of mine.2:08
- I don't want to go so bad to Australia.2:10
- Oh, this is gonna be so fun!2:12
- Yes!2:13
- Yes!2:14
- Yes!2:16
- This could have literally sent us anywhere.2:17
- And we're ending up in freaking Australia.2:19
- Time to reveal to the boys where we're going.2:22
- Ah!2:24
- If you have any exciting announcement to make, we will be leaving town.2:25
- Oh, thank god.2:28
- So funny.2:30
- We are going to the Great Barrier Reef.2:31
- Hey!2:33
- The Heartland!2:35
- I don't know if that was so...2:37
- But you're gonna love it.2:39
- Cam, what do we have to expect?2:39
- Wild animals, crocodiles, mosquitoes, the stars in your face.2:41
- We are booking the flights to Brisbane right now and here is a little secret for all you people who want to travel.2:44
- We have a website, yestheory .com.2:49
- On that website, there is a tab called Book and Adventure.2:51
- If you click this, it is freaking crazy what it does.2:55
- We are saving $400 because our friend Guillaume, who is a travel hacker, set up this plugin on our website to find the cheapest flights.2:58
- I have not found anything cheaper than whatisongyestheory .com.3:06
- Where are we going?3:10
- Going to one of the most incredible places on the freaking planet.3:11
- But to make this more interesting, we've added a twist to it, but we'll explain it to airport.3:16
- Let's go!3:20
- It's said Brisbane.3:26
- I still can't believe it.3:27
- Thank you.3:30
- We have decided that once we arrive in Brisbane, it's a two and a half hour flight to get to the actual Great Barrier Reef.3:31
- We are going to find two very, very lucky strangers who have never been to the Great Barrier Reef and who are from Australia.3:36
- We're gonna ask them if they want to join us.3:42
- If we're gonna go to the most iconic place of a certain continent, we've got to take people who have never been, who live in that continent.3:43
- It's always so interesting in these moments.3:56
- Somebody that's waking up today in Brisbane, Australia, who has no idea that we're about to encounter them and take them on this adventure.3:57
- Their life is about to go like...4:03
- No, no, no, no.4:05
- Pss.4:05
- Completely.4:06
- Alright, we're in the central of the city.4:08
- Wow.4:10
- Just got real, real fast.4:10
- Yeah.4:12
- There's like nobody here right now.4:12
- It's Saturday morning.4:14
- Hello.4:15
- I have a quick question.4:15
- Have you ever been to the Great Barrier Reef, Benches?4:16
- No, not really.4:18
- We just got in this morning and we spun a globe to decide where it would take us.4:19
- So it picked the Great Barrier Reef.4:23
- We decided that we'd come to Brisbane and find somebody to come with us.4:24
- And that's so cool.4:27
- Join us to the Great Barrier Reef.4:28
- I think that's the best idea I've ever heard.4:29
- I would, but I actually have something to pray for right now.4:31
- Ah, damn.4:34
- That was a good first interaction.4:35
- They're very sweet people.4:37
- Hey guys, can I ask you a quick question?4:38
- We just arrived in LA.4:39
- We spin the globe in LA.4:40
- For LA.4:42
- In France.4:43
- In France.4:43
- So we're trying to find two people to come with us from Brisbane to go up to the Great Barrier Reef that have never been there before.4:44
- We've been there before.4:49
- Yeah, yeah.4:51
- Take you guys.4:51
- Have a good one.4:52
- We got to find somebody that has never been there before us.4:53
- That's the goal.4:55
- Shall we ask this guy?4:56
- How are you guys?4:57
- How are you?4:59
- What are you doing?4:59
- How are you?5:00
- I'm good.5:00
- Where are you from?5:01
- Los Angeles.5:02
- We just flew in this morning.5:02
- Oh, really?5:03
- You're happy?5:05
- You're liking it?5:06
- We've been here for two hours, but so far, everybody's been so nice.5:07
- You like to get a photo?5:09
- Or is he traffic control?5:11
- Yeah.5:12
- Hey.5:13
- Luke, I got a question for you.5:13
- Yeah.5:15
- So the reason we're actually here is because we spun a globe through Google's I'm Feeling Lucky Man.5:15
- It said the Great Barrier Reef.5:20
- So we're going to go up to Cairns tonight.5:22
- Really?5:24
- Yeah.5:25
- And we don't want to just go us to it because we've done a bunch of these adventures before and each time we bring strangers with us, it's always amazing.5:25
- So if any chance you'd be down, have you ever been in the Great Barrier Reef?5:31
- No.5:36
- You've never been?5:36
- I'll be on the go.5:37
- Yeah.5:37
- Would you be down to come?5:38
- Yeah.5:39
- Probably.5:39
- I want to hear a much better.5:42
- Well, we would cover it.5:44
- Yeah.5:45
- Yeah.5:45
- How often do you get to travel?5:48
- Never.5:49
- Do you have like a friend or somebody that you'd want to bring to?5:50
- Yeah.5:53
- He's actually been to.5:53
- Yeah.5:54
- Yeah.5:55
- This is what we do for a living.5:55
- Oh, really?5:57
- That's good.5:59
- All right.5:59
- You just have to cross the road there.6:00
- That's right.6:02
- You've got to do my girls vibe.6:02
- Dude, immediately great vibes.6:06
- I'll give you a call when I'm finished.6:10
- Okay.6:12
- All right.6:12
- What?6:16
- What just happened?6:17
- He's the perfect yes man.6:18
- Yeah.6:20
- He's like, oh, no.6:20
- Yeah.6:22
- It's not a very difficult yes to do it.6:22
- It's more of like trusting us and making the commitment of like potentially missing work.6:24
- He's hesitant.6:28
- Yeah.6:29
- He just doesn't know if we're being serious.6:30
- Like, no, Luke, we're being so serious.6:32
- We're about to find out what his friend is like.6:35
- We literally never met this man.6:37
- We're going on a 2D trip to the Great Barrier Reef together.6:39
- I know it's right there for a fraction.6:42
- What's up, dude?6:44
- Hey, guys.6:45
- How you doing, man?6:45
- Travis, nice to meet you.6:46
- What's up, brother?6:48
- Hey, guys.6:48
- Look, nice to meet you, bro.6:49
- What's up, dude?6:51
- Oh, my God.6:52
- Are you guys ready for this or what?6:53
- He just called me at work and said, do you want to go to the Great Barrier Reef tomorrow?6:54
- I was like, what the hell?6:58
- What are you doing?6:59
- I meant to be at my cousin's birthday.7:00
- She's like, I told her and she goes, no, don't go, don't go.7:03
- You're going to get kidnapped.7:06
- I was like, I was kind of thinking of more, but then I was like, nah.7:06
- Have you seen him?7:11
- All right.7:12
- Let's do this.7:12
- We're going to Canes Island Barrier Reef tomorrow with these guys.7:14
- Yeah, I know.7:18
- Yeah, you there?7:19
- Yeah, I'm here.7:20
- Hey.7:21
- Where are you off to?7:21
- Go scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef.7:22
- Scuba diving?7:24
- Yeah.7:25
- I am, mate.7:25
- Just get a little taxi and come to my house.7:26
- I'm just near the airport.7:28
- How does it mean things like that?7:30
- I was at work and they said, do you want to come to the Great Barrier Reef?7:32
- And I said, yeah, why not?7:35
- Why they look like it's in Canes?7:40
- Let's go.7:42
- I'm sorry.7:49
- I'm just waiting for the boys.7:50
- 630.7:53
- Alright.7:55
- We're going to pass out.7:55
- We're going to have at 630 to head out on our boat excursion.7:56
- The next day as we were getting ready to head out to the reef, Luke decided to tell us a bit about his past.8:03
- Alright, Luke, we're ready to hear it.8:09
- How are you going?8:12
- My name's Luke.8:13
- I had a skateboarding accident in 2013.8:14
- Going down the hill, you know what I mean?8:18
- No helmet on.8:19
- Filled off in my head.8:20
- Ended up in the coma for five weeks and yeah, I was hospital for six and a half months.8:21
- I was given a 3 % chance to live.8:25
- Well, they said if I woke up from my coma, I was going to be completely fine.8:26
- I was completely brain dead and in a wheelchair for the rest of my life.8:30
- My family was coming up to say, they're coming up to say, bite me when I wake up.8:33
- Yeah, I get a much desire.8:39
- The three side effects from the injuries, I have short term memory, which is like you forget the stuff you did like the day before yesterday kind of thing.8:42
- I lost my sense of smell because I hit it in that spot.8:49
- I hit my right side on my head so it damages the left side of your body.8:51
- So my left arm is damaged, my leg is damaged.8:54
- I can move it but it's getting better.8:57
- I used to go all the way up there so I'm always positive about things.8:59
- Did you remember anything before the accident?9:02
- No, I lost complete memory.9:04
- When I was in hospital, I had a heart monitor and when my family members and my friends would come in, it would just go like that, it would just9:06
- go straight.9:14
- And then as soon as they come in, it would go up.9:14
- That's why I'm here.9:23
- Because I had so much support around me, I would come up every day to the Gold Coast, Sam with my family.9:25
- Every time I was in hospital, I would say, don't stop, never give up, get stronger.9:34
- How did your outlook on life change after?9:38
- Well, it's just I take each day as it comes now.9:41
- I don't worry about anything.9:44
- I come to the Great Barrier Reef with half an hour's notice.9:45
- You're never going to get this opportunity.9:50
- I'm not one to let opportunities pass up.9:52
- Thank you so much for sharing, Gene.9:54
- No worries man.9:55
- I love you buddy.9:56
- I love you man.9:57
- The morning has come.9:58
- We are officially going to the Great Barrier Reef with these two gentlemen.10:02
- The boys ready?10:06

- These are men ready for diving.10:40

- We have arrived at the Great Barrier Reef.10:57

- Are you looking at the water, buddy?11:35
- Alright, off they go.11:38
- Woo!12:31
- How we doing, fellas?12:31
- Hey, how you going?12:32
- I was so good.12:33
- You don't understand.12:35
- I had the best time of my life ever.12:36
- Take it off my top.12:38
- For the body like that, why are you even wearing a shirt?12:40
- I just want to thank you and Tomo for bringing us out here.12:45
- Doing something me and Luke would have never done before if it wasn't for you.12:48
- Thanks for coming, dude.12:51
- Thanks for paying, man.12:53
- I was broke as sh** before coming here.12:55
- Nearly zeroed my bank account.12:58
- But I'll come.13:00
- You're the same as him, too.13:02
- Yeah.13:04
- You guys are two of the happiest fellas I've ever met.13:04
- Yeah, we stay pretty positive.13:07
- Give off positive energy, positive energy.13:09
- He comes back to you.13:11
- That's what Luke plays anyway.13:12
- It's obviously work for him.13:13
- Look at him.13:14
- How you going, mate?13:15
- Nice to meet you, Luke.13:16
- Cheers.13:17
- Oh, man.13:37
- That was the best.13:38
- I know you guessed the things, people.13:38
- Seriously.13:40
- Oh, man, it was unreal.13:41
- Like, you're the truth.13:42
- Just to go for you two fellas.13:43
- Yeah, you two.13:45
- You two are like the coolest boys we've ever met.13:46
- You two.13:48
- Just down to earth, chilled out bloke.13:48
- As our journey to the Great Barrier Reef came to an end, you were supposed to part ways the next day.13:50
- This is the most amazing thing I've ever seen.13:56
- But after having had such an amazing time with Luke, Luke decided to stay with us to explore the area, its rainforest, and massive waterfalls.13:59
- Use the legends.14:09
- What was it, dude?14:11
- I'll be telling you, that was an awesome ending.14:11
- Thank you.14:13
- Seriously, man.14:15
- I've seen this happening in my life.14:16
- No, I'm not.14:18
- You've changed my life.14:19
- You're the f***ing story.14:22
- You're going to make me cry now.14:23
- Oh, no.14:25
- I'm f***ing happy we made it, dude.14:27
- I f***ed man.14:28
- You put faith back in my life, you know what I mean?14:29
- I wasn't very happy.14:32
- I was happy, but I wasn't.14:33
- Use the legends.14:34
- Like, with Dead Set Legends, you should be freaking palmista.14:35
- Like, Dead Set, you should be like Kings.14:38
- You should be friends for life.14:41
- Yeah.14:43
- Good to go for a concert.14:44
- Thank you.14:48
- I love you guys.14:49
- Love you, buddy.14:52
- When we first arrived in Australia, we truly had no idea what our adventure would look like.14:54
- We're honestly quite nervous when we start these trips because of that.15:00
- But then we stumbled onto Luke, having no idea what he'd gone through, which gave us such an eye -opening perspective that we never know what the people we walk15:04
- past on the street every single day are going through.15:12
- And that it's so easy to forget that every human we cross is somebody totally different from us dealing with all of their own problems.15:16
- So next time you pass someone on the street and make eye contact, I think we should all be a little bit more like Luke and give them a smile15:23
- and a hello.15:30
- Because at the end of the day, you never know how far that can take you.15:31
- And before we go, we want to mention that from now on, we're going to be offsetting our carbon footprints by donating to TerraPass, which provides funds to green projects15:37
- like wind farms and landfill gas capture.15:45
- We also want to take this time to thank our sponsor for helping us make this week's episode happen, SeatGeek.15:47
- And for potentially giving one of you a free ticket anywhere around the world.15:52
- SeatGeek is an app that allows you to buy and sell tickets in the easiest way possible by putting all the tickets in one place.15:57
- So you can focus on what matters most the live experience.16:03
- Plus, if you use the promo code YESTHEORY all in one word, you get $20 off your first purchase.16:06
- You can find all live events like Billie Eilish, Shawn Mendes, Queen and tons more of it.16:12

- random in the comments and SeatGeek will buy you the plane ticket.16:29
- We'll see you next week.16:33
Daily english conversation practice with Yes Theory's globe spin
Two friends spin a globe and let it pick their next flight, and the reactions come faster than either of them can finish a sentence. At 245 words per minute, faster than 92 percent of the catalogue, this clip is english speaking practice built from real overlapping talk, not a scripted back and forth, and it doubles as daily english conversation practice between two friends.
It is rated B1, and the mixed accent means you are not locking onto one voice pattern for the whole clip. That mix is a chance to improve your english accent by tracking two speakers instead of one, across 392 lines of a conversation that keeps moving.
The lines worth slowing down for in this clip
The opening minute is a personal story before the spin even starts, and it gives you full sentences to work with before the exclamations take over.
- "Close my eyes, point my fingers somewhere random, and then open them up to see where I landed." strings three actions together with no pause markers between them, so practise where your pitch drops between each verb.
- "Thomas and I are gonna go spin the globe and go..." the "gonna" collapses "going to" into one beat. Say it as a single sound, not two separate words.
- "Wait, so we're only doing one click and then we just fly there?" the whole point of this line is the rise at the end. Push your pitch up on "there" instead of letting it flatten out.
How to shadow this line by line through the globe spin
Work the clip in the order it plays, since the pace and the emotion both build toward the spin itself.
- Start at line 3, "When I was a kid, I had a globe on my desk." and shadow this line slowly before you try matching speed. It is the calmest sentence in the whole scene.
- Move to line 8, "But 15 years have passed, and I've realized how life changing of an experience seeing other parts of the world and experiencing new cultures truly is." Read it once for meaning, then again matching the speaker's pace, for proper english shadowing practice on a long, unbroken sentence.
- Isolate "Thomas and I are gonna go spin the globe and go..." on its own and repeat it five times until the reduction stops feeling deliberate.
- Finish on the reaction burst, from "3, 2, 1, WOW!" through "Yes!", where the goal is not the words. It is matching the pace and the pitch jumps as the excitement lands.
