  1. Here we go with breakfast number one.0:41
  2. So we're going to start by making this deconstructed yogurt granola and fruit parfait.0:43
  3. I just started by cutting up some kiwi and I also used some fresh raspberries but you can use whatever fruit you have on hand or whatever fruit you enjoy.0:49
  4. And then on the side I poured in some soy yogurt.0:58
  5. I didn't want to mix it together because I didn't want it to get soggy but you can use any plant yogurt you like.1:02
  6. And then I also included this roasted pecan and cranberry granola that is so delicious.1:06
  7. Now the recipe is already up on the Pick Up Limes blog so I'll put the link in the description box below.1:12
  8. But I've also made a video recipe that I'll link at the end of this video.1:17
  9. And I usually make this granola recipe on the weekends.1:21
  10. That way it just lasts throughout the week and makes for quick breakfasts whenever I need them.1:25
  11. So back to the bento box.1:30
  12. I always like to sprinkle on some ground flax seeds as well as some chia seeds just because of the healthy omega fats that these offer.1:32
  13. I also included some coconut flakes and it's that easy to make this deconstructed parfait and then I just mix it all together when I'm ready to eat it.1:39
  14. Onto my morning snack.1:49
  15. It's pretty much just a peanut butter and banana sandwich except for instead of bread I use these whole grain crackers that I cut in half and then spread on1:51
  16. a generous amount of peanut butter.1:58
  17. Then using a ripe banana I cut it into very thick slices to place on top.2:00
  18. Then just a little bit of peanut butter on the other side to help it all stick together and so that doesn't come apart in my lunchbox.2:06
  19. And then served it with some fresh oranges on the side and that was my morning snack on this morning.2:14
  20. So breakfast number one is done.2:21
  21. Onto breakfast number two.2:23
  22. So to make this mashed bean and avocado sandwich we're going to start by using half a cup of pinto beans, then a tablespoon of salsa, half a teaspoon of2:25
  23. ground cumin, a quarter teaspoon of paprika and then we mash it together until it's all well combined.2:35
  24. And then on two pieces of whole grain bread I put on some baby spinach and then distributed that mashed bean mixture that we just created.2:40
  25. Now if you don't have pinto beans, any beans that you have on hand will do.2:48
  26. Then I put on some chives, some tomato slices, as well as some ripe avocado.2:51
  27. And then I drizzled on some sriracha hot sauce because I think the combination of that with the avocado and mashed beans is out of this world.2:57
  28. Sprinkle on a little bit of freshly ground pepper and that's it to make that sandwich.3:05
  29. I also served it with some fresh strawberries on the side.3:10
  30. And that was my breakfast on this day.3:15
  31. As for my morning snack, this is another orange that I sliced up this time.3:18
  32. You'll notice that I like to prepare my oranges.3:23
  33. I find that if an orange goes into my bag whole it's going to come home with me unless I prepare it in some way so that it's ready to3:25
  34. eat.3:31
  35. And then I also had this with some roasted peanuts and dried cranberries to kind of make my own homemade trail mix as well as these dried figs that I'm3:31
  36. absolutely obsessed with.3:39
  37. To be honest, this was a bit much for me just as a morning snack.3:41
  38. So it trailed off into being my afternoon snack as well.3:44
  39. But that's it for breakfast number two.3:47
  40. Super, super easy.3:49
  41. And for the finale, breakfast number three.3:56
  42. This is a chunky monkey banana sandwich or whatever you want to call it.3:58
  43. So to make this, you're going to need two slices of whole grain bread and then spread on a generous amount of almond butter or whatever nut butter you've got4:03
  44. on hand.4:11
  45. I then sprinkled on some hemp seeds again for those healthy omega fats that it offers.4:11
  46. And then another ripe banana cut into thick chunks.4:17
  47. Now what makes this incredibly delicious are these roasted coconuts that I made just by dry roasting some regular coconuts on medium high heat until it became fragrant and golden.4:19
  48. And then using this Canadian pure maple syrup that a friend gave me when I most recently visited Vancouver.4:30
  49. I used just about half a teaspoon to drizzle on top and it made it so absolutely delicious and sweet.4:36
  50. And so that's it to make this sandwich, which is kind of a fun twist on the traditional nut butter and banana sandwich.4:43
  51. And then on the side, I just served it with some fresh grapes and that was my breakfast on this third morning.4:48
  52. As for the morning snack, it really doesn't get easier than this.4:56
  53. It's just two pieces of rice cakes as well as the leftover salsa and avocado from yesterday's breakfast that I then mixed together and it kind of makes this faux4:59
  54. kind of salsa guacamole dip for those rice crackers.5:08
  55. Then on the side, I put in some mixed greens to enjoy the leftover salsa with once the rice cakes were done and some fresh basil as well.5:11
  56. And that's it for breakfast number three.5:22
  57. How easy was that?5:28
  58. Now, in addition to having breakfast like this, I'm also making sure to stay super hydrated throughout the morning by having either water or tea or both.5:30
  59. And I've also gotten into the habit of taking my vitamin D and B12 supplements first thing in the morning.5:39
  60. Now, if you liked this video, you are absolutely going to love the next one, which is also going to be bento box style, but the theme is going to5:44
  61. be lunch and afternoon snack ideas.5:52
  62. So be sure to subscribe so you don't miss out on it.5:55
  63. And if you found any inspiration from this video, be sure to give it a thumbs up.5:58
  64. All right, thanks for stopping by.6:02
  65. I'll see you in the next video.6:04

American accent training with Pick Up Limes' bento box breakfast video

This clip is Sadia from Pick Up Limes walking through a five minute vegan breakfast. It sits at level B1 and moves at 222 words per minute, faster than 79 percent of the catalogue, so it is genuine american accent training: a real voice talking at its own natural speed, not slowed down for learners.

The scene itself is plain and useful. Sadia introduces herself, thanks viewers for her birthday, then builds a deconstructed yogurt granola and fruit parfait in a bento box while narrating each step. Nothing here is scripted for a classroom, which is exactly why it rewards english speaking practice: you have to keep pace with the same rhythm a native listener hears.

Shadow this line: the phrasing in Sadia's granola parfait breakfast

A few lines from the opening are worth repeating out loud before you move on to the rest of the video.

  • "Feel free to show me a little bit of belated birthday love by clicking on that subscribe button." A single long sentence stacking three prepositional phrases in a row, said in one breath. Break it into its parts first, then say it whole.
  • "So there really are no excuses when it comes to having a wholesome breakfast in the morning." The fixed phrase "no excuses when it comes to" is worth drilling on its own until it comes out automatically, not just inside this sentence.
  • "And I usually make this granola recipe on the weekends." A flat, everyday sentence, good for practising the plain rhythm of spoken english once the longer lines feel comfortable.
  • "Let's get started." Short and low in pitch. Use it as a warm up line before you attempt the longer ones above.

Daily english speaking practice: working through this breakfast clip step by step

Work the clip in the order Sadia actually gives it, not at random, since each line sets up the next.

  • Start with "Hi, I'm Sadia." and "Welcome to Pick Up Limes." on their own until the greeting feels natural, since these two lines open every video on the channel.
  • Move to "So it was my birthday recently." then straight into the long "Feel free to show me a little bit of belated birthday love by clicking on that subscribe button." and slow down only on the stacked prepositions.
  • Take "Now each of the meals you're going to see me make here takes only five minutes." as a single unit, since it is one continuous thought without a natural pause.
  • Practise "So there really are no excuses when it comes to having a wholesome breakfast in the morning." three or four times, aiming for the same speed each time rather than slowing down to get it right.
  • Finish the opening block with "Let's get started." and "Here we go with breakfast number one." back to back, since together they mark the shift from introduction to instruction.
  • Once those hold up at full speed, continue into the granola and parfait lines that follow and repeat the same line five times before moving to the next, rather than playing the whole clip once and calling it done.
