Shadowing practice: At a Supermarket with Mark Kulek ESL

This clip is built for english speaking practice at the level where most learners actually need it: everyday errands. Mark Kulek, an American ESL teacher, works through ten short supermarket exchanges twice, first as a model dialogue, then again as isolated sentences you repeat back. The CEFR level is A2, and the pace sits at 137 words per minute, slower than most of the catalogue, which is exactly what makes it usable for someone still building confidence rather than someone already speaking English fluently.

The recording runs 57 lines in total, so a small set of situations repeats by design: a missing item, spoiled fruit, a wrong price, a forgotten bag. You hear each sentence once inside a short exchange and once again on its own, which gives you two separate chances to shadow this line before the video moves to the next one, and the American accent throughout is slow enough to copy without pausing the video.

Three lines carry most of the useful pronunciation work here. Say each one out loud with the stress on the content word, not on the pronouns around it, and the sentence stops sounding like a flat word list.

• "This carton is leaking." Four words, present tense, the complaint stated before any explanation. Put the stress on carton and leaking.
• "I'll get you a new one." The contraction I'll is the whole line's rhythm. Practise it on its own before running the full sentence.
• "I was charged twice." A past passive built for one specific situation, a checkout dispute, not a grammar exercise. No reduced forms were measured in this recording, so the work here is stress and pace, not hunting for slurred forms that are not there.

This is english shadowing for beginners, so the order matters more than speed. Follow the video's own structure instead of jumping around.

• Lines 1 to 22: listen straight through once, no repeating, just to fix the American accent and the ten situations in your ear.
• Line 24, "Let's say the sentences together": this is the video's own cue to start repeating.
• Lines 25 to 44: shadow each isolated sentence right after Mark says it, since every one mirrors a line you already heard in the dialogue above.
• Isolate "This carton is leaking.", "I'll get you a new one." and "I was charged twice." and repeat each five times before moving on.
• Line 45, "Okay, great job.", is the marker that you have completed one full pass. Run the set again at full speed to check how your accent training is holding up.
