American english speaking practice with Emma Chamberlain's Coachella morning vlog

In this clip Emma Chamberlain films herself getting ready for Coachella: eating a hard boiled egg breakfast, complaining about her makeup routine, bantering with people off camera. It is unscripted American English at a natural pace, spoken fast and packed with asides, at 156 words per minute. The level is B2, so you need a working vocabulary and the stamina for someone who barely pauses between thoughts.

What makes it worth practising speaking on is the constant self interruption: she starts a sentence, corrects herself, jokes about being high, then finishes the original thought a few lines later. That is closer to how people actually talk than a scripted dialogue, which is exactly the kind of daily english conversation practice a shadowing session should train you on.

Three lines from the opening show why this clip is worth your time if you want to improve your english accent, not just your vocabulary.

  • "I'm gonna have egg farts from this": the reduced gonna replaces going to and she runs it straight into the next clause with no pause, the actual rhythm of casual American speech, not the gonna you see written down slowly in a textbook.
  • "So this morning I'm having a nice breakfast of vegan yogurt and some hard boiled eggs": one long breath group with no comma pauses in her delivery, a real test of whether you can pronounce english words at speed without dropping the ending of each item in the list.
  • "So you're not gonna do my hair": a question turned into a flat statement by rising pitch alone, no extra words added, the kind of line that is easy to read and hard to say convincingly.
