  17. Okay, Paul, are you ready to talk about the past?1:33
  18. I am ready.1:37
  19. So the past, when we talk about something that is finished, we use special words.1:39
  20. That's right.1:46
  21. Let's start with a very simple word.1:47
  22. Was.1:50
  23. Was, yes.1:52
  24. It comes from is.1:53
  25. So today, I am happy.1:55
  26. Yesterday, I was happy.1:58
  27. Perfect example.2:00
  28. Am and is change to was.2:02
  29. So I can say, today, the weather is sunny.2:06
  30. What about yesterday, Paul?2:11
  31. Yesterday, the weather was cloudy.2:14
  32. Ah, I see.2:17
  33. So is for now, was for the past.2:18
  34. What about a place?2:23
  35. For example, where were you yesterday evening?2:25
  36. Hmm, yesterday evening, ah, I was at home.2:29
  37. At home.2:33
  38. And what about me?2:35
  39. I can say, I was at the supermarket yesterday.2:36
  40. At the supermarket.2:40
  41. So you can say, I am at the supermarket for now.2:42
  42. And I was at the supermarket for yesterday.2:46
  43. Yes, exactly.2:49
  44. It's simple, right?2:51
  45. We just change the word.2:52
  46. It is simple.2:54
  47. What about are?2:56
  48. You are here today.2:58
  49. What about yesterday?3:01
  50. Good question.3:02
  51. Are changes to were.3:04
  52. So you were here yesterday too.3:07
  53. Ah, were.3:10
  54. Yes.3:14
  55. So we are happy today.3:16
  56. And we were happy yesterday.3:20
  57. I see.3:23
  58. Am and is become was.3:24
  59. Are becomes were.3:26
  60. You got it.3:28
  61. Let's try.3:30
  62. Paul, where were you last Saturday?3:31
  63. Last Saturday.3:35
  64. I was at the park.3:37
  65. Oh, nice.3:38
  66. Was it fun?3:40
  67. Yes, it was fun.3:41
  68. The park was beautiful.3:43
  69. Many people were there.3:45
  70. Oh, that's great.3:46
  71. Many people were there.3:48
  72. Perfect use of were.3:51
  73. Thank you.3:53
  74. So Emily, what about you?3:54
  75. Where were you last weekend?3:56
  76. Last weekend, I visited my family.3:58
  77. So I was at my parents' house.4:02
  78. That's lovely.4:04
  79. Were your parents happy to see you?4:05
  80. Yes, they were very happy.4:07
  81. We were all together.4:10
  82. It was a wonderful day.4:12
  83. That sounds so nice.4:13
  84. Family time is the best time.4:15
  85. It really is.4:18
  86. So listeners, was and were are for describing states or locations in the past.4:19
  87. I was tired.4:28
  88. You were at the cinema.4:30
  89. The food was good.4:33
  90. OK, that is great for to be.4:35
  91. But what about actions?4:38
  92. Things we do, like walk or talk or cook.4:40
  93. Ah, yes.4:45
  94. Action words or verbs.4:47
  95. For many verbs in English, we just add ed at the end to talk about the past.4:49
  96. Ed.4:57
  97. So walk becomes walked.4:59
  98. Exactly.5:03
  99. So today, I walk in the park.5:04
  100. Yesterday, I walked in the park.5:08
  101. See?5:11
  102. Simple.5:11
  103. Yes.5:12
  104. OK, so today I talk to Emily.5:13
  105. Yesterday, I talked to my friend on the phone.5:18
  106. Perfect.5:22
  107. You are a natural, Paul.5:23
  108. This is fun.5:25
  109. OK, another one.5:27
  110. Watch.5:28
  111. Like, I watch TV in the evening.5:29
  112. Yes.5:32
  113. So for yesterday, you would say...5:33
  114. I watched TV last night.5:37
  115. Good job.5:39
  116. What did you watch?5:40
  117. I watched a movie.5:42
  118. It was a comedy.5:43
  119. Oh, fun.5:45
  120. Did you laugh?5:46
  121. Yes, I laughed a lot.5:47
  122. Ah, laugh becomes laughed.5:50
  123. Yes, you are discovering the secret.5:54
  124. So many words just need ed.5:58
  125. Cook becomes cooked.6:02
  126. Clean becomes cleaned.6:05
  127. Play becomes played.6:08
  128. OK, let me try a little story.6:10
  129. Yesterday morning, I walked to the cafe.6:14
  130. I listened to music on my headphones.6:19
  131. That's great.6:24
  132. Listened.6:25
  133. Perfect.6:26
  134. What happened at the cafe?6:27
  135. I waited in line.6:29
  136. Then I ordered a coffee.6:31
  137. Waited?6:35
  138. Ordered.6:37
  139. Yes, very good.6:38
  140. Thank you.6:39
  141. This ed is very useful.6:41
  142. So, Emily, what did you do last night?6:44
  143. Last night, let me think.6:48
  144. Ah, I cooked dinner for my friend.6:51
  145. Ah, that's kind of you.6:54
  146. What did you cook?6:57
  147. I cooked chicken and vegetables.6:58
  148. My friend liked it a lot.7:01
  149. Liked?7:03
  150. Another ed word.7:04
  151. That's fantastic.7:07
  152. It seems easy.7:08
  153. It is.7:10
  154. With practice, it becomes very natural.7:11
  155. But there is a small challenge.7:14
  156. Oh, a challenge.7:19
  157. I like challenges.7:21
  158. I know you do.7:22
  159. Some verbs are special.7:24
  160. They are irregular.7:27
  161. They don't use ed.7:30
  162. Irregular.7:32
  163. So, they change in a different way?7:34
  164. Yes, they change completely.7:36
  165. For example, the verb go.7:39
  166. Today, I go to work.7:42
  167. We don't say go -id.7:45
  168. Go -id sounds a little funny.7:47
  169. Yes.7:50
  170. So, what is the past of go?7:51
  171. The past of go is went.7:55
  172. Went.8:00
  173. W -E -N -T.8:01
  174. Went.8:05
  175. Okay.8:06
  176. So, yesterday, I went to work.8:07
  177. Exactly.8:12
  178. Let me ask you.8:13
  179. Where did you go last summer?8:15
  180. Ooh, last summer, I went to the beach.8:18
  181. The beach.8:23
  182. Wonderful.8:24
  183. I also went to the beach last year.8:25
  184. It's a popular place.8:29
  185. Okay, so go becomes went.8:32
  186. What is another irregular verb?8:36
  187. A very common one is eat.8:39
  188. Today, I eat an apple.8:43
  189. Yesterday.8:47
  190. Hmm, not eat.8:49
  191. Maybe ate?8:52
  192. Yes, you got it.8:54
  193. Ate.8:56
  194. A -T -E.8:57
  195. Yesterday, I ate an apple.8:59
  196. Fantastic.9:02
  197. Okay, so last night, you cooked dinner.9:04
  198. Did you eat with your friend?9:09
  199. Yes, we ate together.9:12
  200. We ate the chicken and vegetables.9:14
  201. That's nice.9:17
  202. And I can say, for breakfast today, I ate toast.9:19
  203. Perfect.9:25
  204. So, let's connect them.9:27
  205. Last Saturday, you went to the park.9:29
  206. What did you eat in the park?9:33
  207. I ate a sandwich.9:36
  208. I also drank water.9:39
  209. Oh, is drink irregular too?9:41
  210. It is.9:45
  211. What do you think the past of drink is?9:46
  212. Drink?9:50
  213. Yes.9:51
  214. Wow, Paul, you are so good at this.9:53
  215. Thank you, Emily.9:55
  216. So, go is went.9:57
  217. Eat is ate.10:01
  218. Drink is drank.10:04
  219. This is like a fun puzzle.10:06
  220. It is.10:08
  221. Another one is see.10:09
  222. Today, I see a bird.10:12
  223. Yesterday, I saw a bird.10:16
  224. Saw.10:20
  225. S -A -W.10:21
  226. Okay, so at the park, I saw many dogs.10:24
  227. They were playing.10:30
  228. That sounds cute.10:31
  229. And at the cinema, you saw a comedy movie.10:33
  230. Yes, I saw a very funny movie.10:37
  231. What about you, Emily?10:41
  232. What did you see on your last holiday?10:43
  233. On my last holiday, I went to the mountains.10:47
  234. I saw beautiful trees and a big lake.10:52
  235. Wow, that sounds peaceful.10:55
  236. It was very peaceful.10:57
  237. I took many photos.11:00
  238. Oh, take is another one.11:03
  239. Let me guess.11:05
  240. The past of take is...11:08
  241. taked?11:12
  242. No, that doesn't sound right.11:13
  243. Took?11:16
  244. Yes, took.11:17
  245. You are on a roll.11:19
  246. I took many photos.11:22
  247. I took a bus to the park last weekend.11:25
  248. See, you can use it in many situations.11:28
  249. What about have?11:32
  250. Today, I have a car.11:33
  251. Ah, have is very common.11:37
  252. The past is had.11:40
  253. Yes, exactly.11:43
  254. So yesterday, I had a busy day.11:46
  255. And I had a sandwich for lunch.11:50
  256. And at your friend's birthday party last month, you had fun, right?11:53
  257. Yes, I had a lot of fun.12:00
  258. We ate cake and we sang songs.12:02
  259. Oh, sing.12:06
  260. Sing is also irregular.12:08
  261. It becomes saying.12:11
  262. We sang happy birthday.12:13
  263. We sang loudly.12:16
  264. This is great.12:18
  265. The irregular verbs are different, but they are also very common.12:19
  266. They are.12:23
  267. The best way to learn them is to use them.12:24
  268. Go, went, eat, ate, see, saw, have, had, take, took.12:27
  269. Let's try to make a bigger story with everything.12:38
  270. Can I try?12:41
  271. Of course, please do.12:42
  272. Okay, last weekend was great.12:44
  273. On Saturday, I went to the city with my friend.12:47
  274. Okay, you went to the city.12:50
  275. What did you do there?12:53
  276. First, we walked around and looked at the shops.12:54
  277. I saw a nice shirt in a window.12:58
  278. Walked, looked, saw, a mix of regular and irregular.13:01
  279. Great.13:07
  280. Did you buy the shirt?13:08
  281. No, I didn't, but I bought a book.13:10
  282. Oh, buy is bought.13:14
  283. Yes, it is.13:16
  284. Very good.13:18
  285. Buy becomes bought.13:20
  286. So you bought a book.13:22
  287. Yes, after the shops, we were hungry, so we went to a small restaurant.13:23
  288. You were hungry, so you went to a restaurant.13:29
  289. Make sense.13:33
  290. I ate a big pizza and I drank a lemonade.13:34
  291. My friend had pasta.13:37
  292. Mmm, pizza and pasta.13:39
  293. Sounds delicious.13:42
  294. Ate, drank, had.13:44
  295. Fantastic, Paul.13:46
  296. Thank you.13:48
  297. The food was very good.13:49
  298. We talked for a long time.13:52
  299. Then, we took the train home.13:55
  300. What a complete story.13:59
  301. You used was, regular verbs like walked and talked, and irregular verbs like went, ate, and took.14:02
  302. That was perfect.14:12
  303. Thank you, Emily.14:14
  304. It's really helpful to put it all together in a story.14:15
  305. It makes more sense.14:19
  306. It does.14:22
  307. And that's how we talk in real life.14:23
  308. We mix all these words together.14:26
  309. So, Emily's turn.14:29
  310. Okay, your turn.14:32
  311. What did you do on your last holiday, Emily?14:34
  312. Tell us a story.14:37
  313. Okay, my last holiday was in the spring.14:39
  314. I went to a small town in the countryside.14:43
  315. Oh, lovely.14:46
  316. Did you go alone?14:47
  317. No, I went with my sister.14:50
  318. We stayed in a small hotel.14:53
  319. The hotel was very old, but very nice.14:56
  320. Went, stayed, was.14:59
  321. Great start.15:03
  322. What did you and your sister do?15:04
  323. Every morning, we walked in the hills.15:07
  324. The weather was beautiful.15:11
  325. We saw many sheep and cows.15:13
  326. That sounds very relaxing.15:15
  327. It was.15:19
  328. In the afternoons, we visited the small shops in the town.15:20
  329. I bought some local cheese.15:24
  330. You bought cheese?15:27
  331. I bet it was delicious.15:29
  332. It was.15:32
  333. We ate it with bread for lunch.15:33
  334. We also drank fresh juice.15:35
  335. That sounds like a perfect holiday lunch.15:38
  336. We ate and drank.15:41
  337. Nice.15:44
  338. In the evenings, we were usually tired.15:46
  339. So we read our books.15:50
  340. Oh, red.15:53
  341. This one is tricky.15:54
  342. Tricky?15:56
  343. How?15:58
  344. The spelling is the same.15:59
  345. R -E -A -D.16:01
  346. But the sound is different.16:03
  347. Today, I read.16:05
  348. Yesterday, I read.16:07
  349. Like the color.16:09
  350. Ah, that is a tricky one.16:11
  351. So I read a book last night.16:15
  352. Exactly.16:19
  353. So we read our books and listened to the quiet sounds of the countryside.16:20
  354. We had a wonderful time.16:27
  355. Your holiday sounds amazing, Emily.16:29
  356. So peaceful.16:33
  357. And your story was a great example.16:34
  358. Thank you, Paul.16:37
  359. The key is just to remember which verbs are regular with E -D and which are irregular, like went or saw.16:39
  360. And it's okay if we make mistakes, right?16:50
  361. People will still understand.16:53
  362. Absolutely.16:55
  363. Making mistakes is part of learning.16:57
  364. The most important thing is to try.17:00
  365. To talk.17:03
  366. So if a listener wants to talk about their day, they can say, I woke up.17:03
  367. Awake is woke.17:11
  368. I ate breakfast.17:13
  369. I went to work.17:15
  370. I worked hard.17:18
  371. I talked to my colleagues.17:19
  372. I came home.17:23
  373. Come is came.17:25
  374. Yes!17:26
  375. You are finding more irregular verbs.17:27
  376. Wake, woke.17:31
  377. Come came.17:31
  378. That's brilliant.17:34
  379. You just described a whole day in the past.17:35
  380. It feels good.17:39
  381. It feels like I can really share my experiences now.17:40
  382. That's the goal.17:44
  383. So you can tell your friends or family what you did yesterday or last weekend.17:46
  384. Let's review the main irregular ones we talked about.17:52
  385. Go to went.17:56
  386. Eat to ate.17:58
  387. See to saw.17:59
  388. Have to had.18:02
  389. Drink to drink.18:04
  390. Take to took.18:06
  391. Buy to bought.18:08
  392. Come to came.18:11
  393. That is a fantastic list, Paul.18:12
  394. And for most other action words, just add ed.18:16
  395. Walked, played, watched, cooked.18:21
  396. And don't forget was and were.18:24
  397. I was happy.18:27
  398. They were at home.18:28
  399. Exactly.18:30
  400. Wow, Paul, we covered a lot today.18:32
  401. I feel like our listeners have some great tools now to talk about the past.18:35
  402. I think so too.18:40
  403. It was a very helpful conversation.18:42
  404. I learned a lot myself.18:45
  405. Me too.18:48
  406. It's always good to practice.18:49
  407. Well, our time for today is almost finished.18:52
  408. That went by fast.18:56
  409. It really did.18:59
  410. So, to all our amazing listeners, now it's your turn to practice.19:01
  411. Yes, we have a question for you and we would love for you to answer in the comments below.19:07
  412. The question is, what did you do last weekend?19:15
  413. You can write something simple.19:19
  414. I went to the park or I watched a movie or I ate pizza with my family.19:21
  415. Yes, tell us a little about your past weekend.19:30

Shadow This American English Podcast to Improve English Speaking

This is an American English podcast for A2 beginners about how to talk about things that happened. Emily and Paul teach by conversation, not lecture. The pace runs at 140 words per minute, faster than most beginner material but still clean and deliberate. Each grammar point is followed by real examples spoken naturally. You hear both of them speaking, so you get two voices and two natural rhythms to shadow. This is daily English conversation practice in a structured format. The speech is conversational: not someone reading a textbook.

The Language in This Clip

The podcast works through past tense with concrete examples. Listen to line 37: "So today, I am happy." Then line 38: "Yesterday, I was happy." This is the core move: the verb changes from am to was. No complexity, just a form swap shown in a sentence you can repeat. Later, Paul and Emily show you questions. Line 47 is "For example, where were you yesterday evening?" The pitch rises at the end, the word order shifts to question form. The phrase comes again in line 48 when Paul answers: "Yesterday evening, ah, I was at home." Notice the slight pause after "ah" and the stress on "home" at the end. Line 43 gives another example: "Yesterday, the weather was cloudy." The pattern repeats, but the content changes. You are shadowing a conversation, not a script.

  • The natural stress pattern when speaking about yesterday
  • The intonation of questions that ask where someone was

How to Work Through This Clip

Take the clip in focused chunks to build confidence with shadowing English speaking practice.

  • Start with lines 1 to 20: greetings and setup. Get used to both voices and the natural pace of American English spoken by native speakers.
  • Move to lines 31 to 45: the core grammar explanation. Emily and Paul show you how am and is become was. Shadow lines 37 to 40 out loud, repeat each sentence three times.
  • Shadow lines 47 to 54: questions and answers about where you were. Say the questions with the right stress, then the responses with your own voice.
  • Focus on lines 60 to 72: more examples of are becoming were. Line 63 shows "Are changes to were." Line 64 demonstrates: "So you were here yesterday too." Repeat these until the form feels natural.
  • Go back to lines where you stumbled. Getting the sound and the stress in your mouth matters more than speed. A line you practice five times beats a clip you play once.
