Practise English Speaking with an A2 Bakery Conversation

This clip is ten very short conversations at a bakery, run through once and then repeated in full, so the same lines land twice in one recording. That structure is what makes it useful for english speaking practice: the first pass is for listening, the second is your cue to speak along. Mark Kulek delivers every line in a clear, unhurried american accent at 147 words per minute, a pace built for A2 learners rather than native speed.

Nothing here runs long. Each conversation is a question, an answer, and a short close: a customer asking for a croissant, checking the price of a cake, asking whether the bread is sweet. The vocabulary stays inside everyday transaction english, croissant, muffins, donuts, slice, bread, so you are working on delivery rather than fighting unfamiliar words.

How to Pronounce English Words in an American Accent Bakery Exchange

Three lines are worth slowing down for. "Could I have a croissant?" rises at the end, the shape of a polite request rather than a demand, and "croissant" is the one word in the set that trips up non native speakers, so isolate it before you try the full line.

  • "Could I have a croissant?" rising intonation, polite request shape
  • "Yes, it just came out." the answer to the bread question, natural stress falls on "just"
  • "Is this for here or to go?" a two option question compressed into one breath, standard at any American counter
  • "Can you slice this bread?" a modal request, said with no hesitation between "can you" and "slice"
  • "Thanks, you too." a reciprocal closing line, said quickly and without extra stress

Work through this recording as english shadowing practice for beginners, in the order below, using the repeat built into the clip rather than replaying the whole video.

  • Listen to the first pass of all ten exchanges, lines 4 to 25, without speaking, just to hear the questions and answers land
  • On the second pass, lines 28 to 49, shadow this line as it plays: "Could I have a croissant?" then the reply, then move to the next pair
  • Pause after "Is this for here or to go?" and say both "To go, please" and the alternative answer out loud before continuing
  • Repeat "Can you slice this bread?" and "Sure, no problem" five times back to back, this is the longest exchange in the set and the one most worth drilling
  • Finish by saying all ten closings in a row, "Thank you" through "Thanks, you too", to practise improving your english speaking rhythm across a full conversation rather than one line at a time
