- That was a great story about your day!5:21
- Yes!5:24
- Thank you, Jesse!5:25
- That gives us a really good picture of her daily routine.5:26
- I liked how clear she was with the times, like 6 a .m.5:31
- and 12 p .m.5:36
- That's very helpful when you're talking about your day.5:37
- Yes, very clear.5:40
- And she used so many common verbs that we use every day.5:42
- Like, she wakes up, she gets out of bed.5:47
- Good examples!5:51
- Yes!5:53
- I noticed she said, I don't like waking up early, but my job starts early.5:54
- I understand that feeling, Paul.6:00
- Oh, me too, Emily.6:03
- Sometimes it's hard to wake up early, but it's good to have a reason like a job.6:06
- True.6:12
- And she said, I brush my teeth and wash my face.6:13
- These are things we all do.6:16

- And then she mentioned coffee.6:21
- She makes a cup of coffee.6:24

- Email, social media.6:41

- And she takes the bus.7:02
- That's a common way to travel.7:03
- Yes, taking the bus is very common.7:06
- And the ride is 30 minutes.7:09
- That's a good time to listen to music or a podcast, like our podcast.7:12
- Yes, exactly.7:18
- Listen to Mr.7:20
- English Channel on your bus ride.7:21
- And she arrives at work around 7 .30 a .m.7:24
- Her work starts at 7 .45 a .m.7:28
- Good to be on time.7:32
- Yes, always good to be on time.7:33
- And she works on her computer for many hours.7:36
- Many of us do that now, right?7:39
- In an office.7:42
- So true.7:43
- Computer work is very common.7:44
- And then lunch at 12 p .m.7:47
- A sandwich or a salad from home.7:50
- That's a good way to save money and eat healthy.7:53
- Yes, definitely.7:56
- And eating with coworkers.7:58
- That's nice.8:00
- Building friendships at work is important.8:01
- Yes, talking and laughing.8:04
- It makes the work day more fun.8:06
- Then she continues to work in the afternoon.8:09
- And sometimes has meetings.8:12
- Meetings are a big part of work for many people.8:14
- And her work day finishes at 4 .30 p .m.8:18
- That's a good time to finish.8:21
- Yes, it is.8:23
- Not too late.8:24
- Then she takes the bus home, arriving around 5 p .m.8:26
- And then she likes to relax for a bit.8:30
- Sitting on the sofa, watching TV, or reading a book.8:32
- That's important after a work day, right?8:36
- Absolutely.8:39
- It's important to relax and disconnect from work.8:40
- And then she makes dinner around 6 .30 p .m.8:44
- She likes to cook.8:47
- That's a nice hobby.8:49
- Yes, cooking is great.8:51
- And then, the not -so -fun part, washing the dishes.8:52
- Yes, someone has to do it.8:58
- But it's part of the routine.9:00
- And then, spending time with family in the evening.9:03
- Watching a movie or talking.9:06
- That's so nice.9:09
- Very nice.9:10
- Family time is important.9:11
- And sometimes she exercises a little, like a walk.9:14
- Good for health.9:17
- Yes, a walk is a great way to exercise.9:18
- And before bed, she takes a shower and reads a book.9:22
- Reading before bed is a wonderful habit.9:26
- It helps you relax.9:29
- And she goes to bed around 10 .30 p .m.9:31
- And she tries to get enough sleep, 7 or 8 hours.9:34
- That's very good advice.9:38
- Sleep is so important for our bodies and minds.9:40
- Yes, it is.9:43
- So Paul, hearing Jesse's routine, how is it similar or different from your routine?9:45
- Hmm, that's a good question, Emily.9:52
- Well, like Jesse, I also wake up early for work, but a little later than her, around 7 a .m.9:55
- And I also don't always like him.10:03
- Yes, the alarm clock is not always our best friend, right?10:08
- No.10:14
- But I also get out of bed, go to the bathroom, brush my teeth, and wash my face.10:15
- Those are the same.10:21
- And then coffee.10:23
- I definitely make a cup of coffee first thing.10:25
- Of course, the coffee connection.10:28
- Yes.10:31
- And I also check my phone for messages and emails while I drink my coffee.10:32
- So very similar morning routine so far.10:38
- How about you, Emily?10:42
- Very similar for me too.10:43
- I also wake up around 7 a .m.10:46
- And yes, the coffee is a must.10:48
- I also check my phone for news and messages.10:51
- I also get dressed after that.10:55
- Simple clothes for work here at the studio.10:58
- Yes, comfort is key.11:01
- Do you eat breakfast at home, Emily?11:03
- Yes, I do.11:05
- My breakfast is usually yogurt with fruit and granola.11:07
- Sometimes I have toast too.11:11
- It depends on the day.11:13
- Oh, that sounds very healthy and delicious.11:15
- Jesse eats toast, so that's a similarity.11:18
- My breakfast is usually toast and eggs or sometimes cereal.11:21
- Nice.11:26
- So after breakfast, how do you get to work, Paul?11:27
- Jesse takes the bus.11:31
- I drive to work, Emily.11:33
- My office is a bit far, so driving is faster for me.11:35
- It takes about 25 minutes.11:39
- Ah, okay.11:41
- So a different way to commute.11:43
- I also drive to work.11:46
- It's only about 15 minutes for me.11:48
- So a short drive.11:51
- That's nice.11:52
- A short drive is good.11:54
- And when you arrive at work, what do you do first?11:55
- Jesse checks her emails.11:59
- Yes, I also check my emails first thing, and then I start organizing my tasks for the day.12:01
- So that's very similar to Jesse.12:08
- Me too.12:11
- Emails are always first.12:13
- Then, like Jesse, I work on my computer for many hours.12:15
- My job also involves a lot of computer work.12:21
- Yes, hours too, for the podcast.12:26
- And lunchtime?12:30
- Jesse eats at 12 p .m.12:32
- I usually have lunch around 1 p .m., so a little later than Jesse.12:34
- I often bring my lunch too, like a salad or leftovers from dinner the night before.12:41
- Oh, leftovers are great.12:49
- I usually bring my lunch too, or sometimes I buy something nearby.12:52
- So we all bring food sometimes.12:57
- Yes, it's practical.13:00
- And then the afternoon work.13:03
- Do you have many meetings, Emily?13:06
- Jesse mentioned she sometimes has meetings.13:09
- Yes, I have meetings too, especially online meetings these days.13:13
- So that's similar to Jesse's routine.13:18
- And my workday also finishes around 4 .30 p .m.13:21
- or 5 p .m.13:25
- Mine finishes around 5 p .m.13:27
- or 5 .30 p .m., so a little later than Jesse.13:30
- And then, after work, what do you do?13:35
- Do you relax for a bit, like Jesse?13:39
- Yes, I definitely relax for a bit when I get home.13:42
- I usually sit down, maybe listen to music, or just unwind for a few minutes.13:46
- It's important to decompress.13:53
- I agree.13:55
- I usually change into comfortable clothes and sit on my sofa for a bit, too.13:56
- Maybe read the news.14:03
- And then dinner.14:06
- Jesse makes dinner around 6 .30 p .m.14:07
- Yes, I also make dinner around that time, between 6 p .m.14:11
- and 7 p .m.14:17
- I like to cook too, like Jesse.14:18
- But sometimes I order food.14:21
- Yes, me too.14:25
- It's nice to have a break from cooking sometimes.14:27
- And after dinner, the dishes, right?14:29
- Yes, the dishes.14:33
- No escape.14:35
- But it's part of the routine.14:36
- And then, evening activities.14:39
- Jesse spends time with her family.14:42
- I often spend time with my family, too.14:44
- Or I might watch a movie or read a book.14:47
- Sometimes I go for a walk, like Jesse.14:50
- So that's quite similar.14:53
- Yes, very similar.14:55
- And before bed, Jesse takes a shower and reads a book.14:57
- I also take a shower in the evening, and I like to read a book, too.15:02
- Or listen to an audiobook.15:06
- It helps me relax before I go to bed.15:08
- Yes, me too.15:11
- And what time do you usually go to bed, Paul?15:13
- Jesse said 10 .30 p .m.15:17
- I try to go to bed around 10 .30 p .m.15:19
- or 11 p .m.15:23
- So very similar to Jesse.15:24
- I try to get enough sleep, too, around 7 or 8 hours.15:27
- Yes, that's my goal, too.15:31
- Around 10 .30 p .m.15:33
- or 11 p .m.15:35
- is ideal.15:37
- So it seems like Jesse has a very typical, busy, weekday routine, just like many of us.15:38
- Yes, definitely.15:45
- It's great to see how much we can learn from her simple description.15:48
- All these verbs like wake up, get out of bed, brush teeth, make coffee, get dressed, eat breakfast, go to work, have lunch, finish work, go home, make dinner, wash15:53
- dishes, take a shower, read a book, go to bed.16:09
- These are everyday actions.16:14
- Exactly!16:17
- And all the time expressions.16:18
- 6 a .m., 7 a .m., 12 p .m., 4 30 p .m., 5 p .m., 6 30 p .m., 10 30 p .m.16:20
- So useful.16:28
- Yes, very important for talking about your day.16:30
- Well, Emily, should we listen to Jesse's routine one more time?16:35
- It's good to hear it again after discussing it.16:40
- That's a great idea, Paul.16:44
- Let's listen to Jesse again.16:46
- Pay attention to all the words and phrases we just talked about.16:48
- Hello, my name is Jesse.16:55
- I want to tell you about my daily routine.16:58

American Accent Practice with a Beginner Podcast About Daily Routines
This clip is an American podcast conversation between two hosts, Emily and Paul, who open the episode with small talk about their morning before moving into the day's topic: daily routines. The show sits at CEFR level A2 and runs at a measured 167 words per minute, so each sentence has room to land before the next one starts. That combination makes it solid english speaking practice material if you want dialogue that doesn't rush you.
Partway through, the hosts read out a message from a friend named Jessie describing her own weekday morning, so within one clip you get two registers: casual banter between Emily and Paul, then a plainer narrated account from Jessie. That contrast is useful for daily english conversation practice, because the same simple vocabulary gets delivered two different ways, once as dialogue, once as monologue.
The Everyday English in Emily, Paul and Jessie's Conversation
A few lines from the opening show what to listen for once you start working through this recording.
- "How's your day going?": a short, natural opener with a rise on "going", worth borrowing whenever you need everyday english for small talk.
- "I don't like waking up early, but my job starts early.": two short clauses joined by "but", each one stressing "early" a bit differently, good practice for contrast intonation.
- "While the coffee is brewing, I check my phone.": the words "while the" run together at speed even though nothing here is slang, a small test of connected rhythm.
- "It's a super useful topic for English learners because we talk about our day every day, right?": a long run-on sentence that ends on the tag question "right?", good for breath control and for practising a rising tag.
How to Shadow This American English Conversation Line by Line
Work through the clip in this order rather than jumping around; each stretch builds on the rhythm of the one before it.
- Start with the greeting exchange, "Hi Emily." through "How about you?": it's the shortest unit in the clip, so shadow this line and its replies until the call and response rhythm feels automatic.
- Move to "Today, we're going to talk about daily routines." Repeat it on its own until the phrase "daily routines" no longer slows you down, since it recurs across the episode.
- Shadow Jessie's monologue starting at "I wake up at 6 a .m." and the short line right after it. Because it's uninterrupted narration rather than back and forth dialogue, it's the best segment here for building a steadier, more fluently paced delivery.
- Finish by isolating "While the coffee is brewing, I check my phone." and repeating just that one line five times before moving on. It's the densest clause in the section, and getting comfortable with it in isolation makes the surrounding lines easier.
