How to pronounce English words in a British accent

British accent practice on real speech: BBC presenters, British YouTubers and British series, each clip with a transcript and word by word timing.

  • Final r is not pronounced: car, here and water end on the vowel.
  • The t at the end of what and but becomes a catch in the throat, and younger speakers do it inside butter and bottle too.
  • The vowel in bath, can't and dance is the one that gives you away first if your English came from American film.
  • British English intonation falls further at the end of a statement. Copy the fall before you chase the vowels.

Which clips to practise British English on

Accents inside Britain differ more than most learners expect, and the catalogue keeps that variety rather than flattening it.

  • News and BBC clips for received pronunciation and careful articulation.
  • Vlogs and street interviews for modern spoken British English with all its reductions.
  • British series for everyday dialogue and regional accents.
  • Compare a line here with the same line said by an American speaker to hear what actually changes.
