English Speaking Practice with a Fast British Commentary Voice (B2)

This clip is live football commentary from Sky Sports Premier League, built around Chris Kamara's touchline reports during a Bournemouth versus Everton match before the coverage cuts to Crystal Palace against Leicester. The pace runs at 214 words per minute, faster than 73 percent of the catalogue, so the two commentators talk over each other, correct themselves mid sentence and react to goals as they happen. That speed makes it a demanding clip for english speaking practice at B2: you have to follow quick handoffs between the studio and the pitch, half finished thoughts and sudden bursts of excitement.

Nothing here is scripted. Kamara gets his colleague's name wrong on air, the assistant referee's decision gets argued over in real time, and Wilfrid Zaha's goal draws a genuine, unrehearsed reaction. That messiness is what makes the clip worth your time: real broadcast English, spoken fast, in a British accent, is closer to what you will actually hear than a course dialogue recorded in a studio.

British English Pronunciation Practice in Chris Kamara's Commentary

Three lines from the opening exchanges reward slowing down if you want british english pronunciation practice that goes beyond reading off a page.

  • "Yeah, they're still having a go, Geoff." Cammy's casual opener runs the filler "Yeah" straight into the sentence with almost no pause, and "having a go" is a British way of saying they are still trying. Listen for how flat the stress stays until "go".
  • "How many times do I have to tell him about calling me Carly?" Kamara's aside about being called the wrong name on air. The question climbs through the sentence and drops hard on "Carly", the kind of exasperated rise and fall a script rarely gives you.
  • "It's been a cracker, Geoff!" Cracker is British slang for an excellent match, and the line is compressed: "It's been a" almost runs together before the stress lands on "cracker".

An English Shadowing Practice Order for This B2 Commentary Clip

Work through the clip in the order the excitement actually builds, rather than jumping straight to the goals.

  • Start with line 2, "Yeah, they're still having a go, Geoff.", to get the flat, conversational register before anything happens.
  • Move to line 12, "How many times do I have to tell him about calling me Carly?", and repeat the rise and fall of the question on its own, away from the noise around it.
  • Shadow this line five times: "It's a goal, Geoff!" The sudden jump in pitch on "goal" is the hardest part of the whole clip to reproduce.
  • Finish on line 39, "It's been a cracker, Geoff!", and match the falling energy that follows a peak instead of another rise.
