IELTS Speaking Practice From a Real Band 9 Interview
This clip is an IELTS speaking interview: an examiner asks about mountains, trees and weather, and the candidate answers at length, the way part two and part three of the real test actually run. It is good material for english speaking practice because you are not shadowing a script, you are shadowing someone thinking on the spot and building an answer sentence by sentence.
The accent is British and the pace is measured at 184 words per minute, faster than 48 percent of the catalogue, so it moves at a real conversational clip rather than a slowed down teaching voice. The transcript sits at B1, which means the vocabulary itself is not the obstacle, the challenge is keeping up with someone who answers fluently and does not pause for you.
The Language in This IELTS Speaking Topics Sample
A few lines are worth slowing down for before you try to speak them.
- "I always handpick locations which have mountains and a beautiful landscape, greenery." The list trails off onto a single noun instead of closing the sentence properly, which is exactly how people build answers under time pressure. Practising it helps you speak english fluently in the same unplanned, additive way.
- "There are only benefits of planting more tree." The singular "tree" where a fluent writer would put "trees" is a small slip that Whisper caught faithfully. Say it as spoken, it is a useful reminder that even a band 9 answer is not grammatically perfect in real time.
- "I would say drastically, yes." Notice the adverb placed before the confirmation instead of after it. Copying the rise and fall on "drastically" is a quick way to work on how to pronounce english words with the right stress rather than flattening every syllable equally.
How to Work Through This B1 Interview Clip
Go line by line rather than trying to take the whole answer in one pass.
- Start at line 6, "I always handpick locations which have mountains and a beautiful landscape, greenery." Play it once, then shadow this line three times before moving on.
- Move to line 11, "In Himachal, they have lodges." It is short, so use it to lock the rhythm of the British vowels before the sentences get longer.
- Move to line 14, "live and how they cook and how they clean.", and repeat the three verb list until the beats land evenly, not rushed at the end.
- Return to line 29, "There are only benefits of planting more tree," and say it exactly as transcribed, not corrected, so your ear gets used to real unscripted speech.
- Finish on line 42, "I would say drastically, yes," aiming to match the stress on "drastically" rather than the words alone.
- Once those five lines feel natural, play the section straight through and shadow the whole passage without stopping, which is closer to daily english conversation practice than any single quoted line.
