How to start on American pronunciation

American accent practice for beginners: short A1 and A2 clips from American speakers, with a transcript under every line. The accent is not simplified, only the sentences are.

  • Start with the flap. A quick d in water, better and city moves a beginner closest to an American accent.
  • At this level reductions are the lesson, not the obstacle. A line with gonna in it is worth two without.
  • Do not chase the American r yet. It is the slowest sound to acquire and the least likely to stop anyone understanding you.
  • One line, five repetitions. The clip is not the unit of work.

Where to go next

This page is a subset of the full American accent collection, kept to the lines a beginner can hold.

  • Move to the full American accent set once full speed stops being the obstacle.
  • Take the beginner conversation clips in parallel for turn taking.
  • Compare a line with a British speaker saying the same thing to hear what actually changes.
