Shadowing practice: Real English® - 46 - Yesterday

This clip is a street interview that keeps asking one question: what did you do yesterday. The host stops person after person in New York and puts the same question to each of them, so you hear one simple pattern answered by dozens of different voices, jobs and moods. That repetition is what makes it useful english speaking practice: you are not chasing a new grammar structure every few seconds, you are hearing the same past tense pattern land differently each time.

The level is A2 and the pace is 191 words per minute, quick for a beginner clip, so short answers still move fast even though the vocabulary stays simple. Across 56 lines you get one interviewer and many interviewees, real unscripted American voices with the pauses and unfinished thoughts real speech has, which makes this clip a natural fit for american accent training rather than a studio recording read from a script.

Most answers here are strings of short past tense verbs joined by "and," which is exactly the shape a beginner needs for this kind of everyday english conversation. A few lines are worth slowing down for on purpose.

• "Oh, yesterday I remained in the house and I cooked and I did some housework." Four plain past tense verbs in a row, said at full interview speed, so it is a good line to shadow this line for rhythm before you try the harder ones.
• "I went to my shrink and I went to had appointments with people that I'm working with." The speaker corrects herself mid sentence and it stays in the recording, which is closer to how people actually talk than any textbook dialogue.
• "Yeah, I was definitely an overachiever at school." One long adjective, overachiever, dropped casually into a short answer. Listen for how little stress falls on the small words around it and how much lands on that one word.

Work through the 56 lines in order rather than jumping around. The question repeats, so your ear adjusts to it fast and you can put full attention on each new answer.

• Start with line 3, "Oh, yesterday I remained in the house and I cooked and I did some housework," and repeat it until the three verbs come out smoothly, not as separate words.
• Move to line 12, "I studied, I went to the gym and worked out, worked on my computer, watched a little TV," and practise it as one breath group, the way the speaker says it.
• Take line 40, "Yesterday I attended a speech at Columbia University," on its own and pay attention to where the stress falls, since it is one of the few longer, more formal sentences in the clip.
• Finish on line 47, the self correcting shrink line, and try to catch the exact place where the speaker changes direction rather than smoothing it out when you repeat it.
• Once single lines feel steady, answer the interviewer yourself in the pause after each question, using your own yesterday, before checking your score against the native line.
