Shadowing practice: Finding Donnie the Sea Turtle | A2 ESL Listening Practice for English Learners

This clip is a short narrated story at A2 level about two kids who find a baby sea turtle on the beach and decide to keep him. It runs at 126 words per minute, faster than only 6 percent of the catalogue, so it sits near the slow end and every line has room to land before the next one starts.

The voice is American and clear, and the scene moves from a breakfast argument about who is hungry into a real dialogue at a pet supply counter. That mix, a story with characters plus back and forth speech, is exactly the shape you want for english speaking practice at this level: short sentences, familiar situations, nothing rushed.

No contractions were measured in this recording, and you can hear that choice in the dialogue itself. Instead of a casual 'you don't', the shop scene has "You do not even know if Donnie is a boy." and "You do not know if Donnie is a girl." Saying the full "do not" slows the mouth down and makes each word separate, which is useful if you are still training your ear before you try to speak english fluently at natural speed.

Two other lines are worth your attention for different reasons. "We have a baby sea turtle." is delivered flat and simple, a plain statement you can copy word for word. • Move to the shop greeting at lines 50 to 55: "Hi there.", "Can I help you?", "We have a baby sea turtle.", "You have a what?" Practise the greeting and the surprised reply as a pair, matching the rise on 'what'.
• Finish with lines 57 to 63, the boy or girl question: "Can Donnie have that?", "You do not even know if Donnie is a boy.", "You do not know if Donnie is a girl." Shadow these full form sentences slowly first, then again closer to the speaker's pace.
• Once those three blocks feel steady, run the whole 63 line stretch straight through once, out loud, without pausing to check yourself.
