Shadowing practice: Hotel Transylvania — Meet Johnnystein

This clip is fifteen lines of animated dialogue at A2 level, which makes it a good entry point for american accent training if full length movie scenes still move too fast for you. A monster child panics, gets scolded, then meets a new cousin called Johnnystein, and the emotional swings from fear to confusion to excitement give you several distinct tones to copy in one short recording.

Because it is a comic family exchange rather than narration, the pace stays close to how people actually talk to kids: short bursts, interruptions, exclamations. • Shadow line 2, "Not as long as they think you're a monster.", slowly once, then at full speed, since it is the longest line in the clip and the one most likely to trip you up.
• Take line 4, "That's kinda racist.", on its own and say it exactly as flat and quiet as the recording, resisting the urge to over pronounce the reduced "kinda" back to its full form.
• Group lines 11 and 12, "He's your cousin. Johnnystein." and "Yes, yes, yes!", together, since the second line is pure excitement and works as a short pronunciation drill on stressed repeated words.
• Finish on line 13 through 15, "I don't have no cousin.", "No, no, you do. He's your sixth cousin.", and "Three times removed.", said back to back, to practise a short argument and comeback as one unit rather than three isolated lines.
• Once you can say all fifteen lines without checking the transcript, record yourself and compare your rises and falls to the original before moving to a longer clip.
