English listening practice with Simon Sinek on parenting and leadership

This clip is a short piece of English listening practice built from a real business lecture, not a scripted dialogue. Simon Sinek compares raising kids to leading a team, and the recording runs at 222 words per minute, faster than most of the catalogue, so your ear has to keep up with a speaker who does not slow down for you.

The level is B2, which fits the vocabulary here: words like leadership, businesses and systems sit next to plain talk about babies and parents. That mix is exactly what makes it good material for english speaking practice. You are not decoding academic language, you are training your mouth to keep pace with a fluent American speaker making a real argument.

The language in this clip: plain words, one long argument

Sinek builds his point out of short, almost conversational lines rather than polished sentences, which is worth noticing before you start any english shadowing practice on it.

  • "People say, I want to have kids." A flat opening statement, no filler. Say it with the same flat delivery before you move on.
  • "Everybody's like, oh my god, I own my own businesses." Notice everybody's like standing in for a plain statement, a spoken habit worth copying if you want to sound less like a textbook and more like a native speaker.
  • "The systems you can master." Object first, subject second. That word order carries the stress: master lands hard because the sentence built up to it.
  • "And to serve those who serve others is the greatest joy anyone can achieve in life." The longest line in the clip, and the one to save for last: it needs the breath control the shorter lines build up to.

How to shadow this lecture at B2, line by line

Work through this recording in a fixed order rather than jumping around. It is only 17 lines, short enough to run twice in one session.

  • Play lines 1 to 3 first and just listen. This is the setup, said slowly enough to hear every word before the pace picks up.
  • Shadow line 5 on its own several times. "Everybody's like, oh my god, I own my own businesses" is the fastest stretch in the clip, and getting the rhythm right here is most of the work.
  • Take lines 7 to 9 as one unit. "The process is easy", "you can figure that out", "the systems you can master" are three short, parallel statements. Say them back to back until the rhythm feels automatic, not word by word.
  • Finish on line 16 alone. Record yourself saying it and compare your pace to Sinek's. This is where you actually improve english speaking rhythm, not just accuracy on individual words.
  • Once all 17 lines feel comfortable, run the whole clip once through without pausing. If you can keep up with 222 words per minute here, most everyday conversation will feel slower by comparison.
