- What are you up to?0:43
- I just wrote a book.0:44
- What did I do?0:48
- I know it now, the rustle in the bag, the microphone.0:51
- I can position my torso that way so the rustle...0:55
- It was really bad, was it?0:58
- I get rustle.1:00
- I bag rustle and problems, you know?1:01
- Yeah.1:03
- Is it a melder?1:04
- LAUGHTER It's weird, cos I was only thinking about...1:06
- The last few times I've seen you on TV and stuff, I've been blown away by your passion and intelligence.1:11
- You're on fire, like...1:22
- Thank you very much.1:24
- You've stuffed to be given out about, don't you?1:25
- I have a fair few things to be given out about, yeah.1:28
- Erm...1:32
- Trying my best, like, do you know what I mean?1:32
- What I've found is, like, I'm a clown, like, I'm a fucking clown.1:34
- Yeah.1:38
- And when a clown says something that...1:38
- You're fairly angry for a clown, though.1:41
- Yeah, but clowns are allowed to be angry, do you know what I mean?1:42
- The things that I say are not in any way remarkable.1:46
- It's just because I look like an airship, people listen.1:48
- Whereas if I was wearing a suit, people are used to people in suits saying certain things, so you need to change the delivery of the medium, and then all1:52
- of a sudden people pay attention.2:00
- Like, Trump is doing it in the opposite way, you know?2:02
- Dressed like a suit but talking like a clown.2:06
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.2:08
- So, do you...2:10
- Am I right in thinking, do you have a degree in something?2:11
- I have a few different things.2:15
- I did a Masters last year in a socially engaged art, which is a way of bringing art out of galleries and into the public sphere, because art has gone2:16
- up its own hole.2:25
- And then I studied psychology for years as well.2:26
- I studied psychotherapy.2:30
- You've amazed and passionate, like.2:31
- You're concerned about the country.2:33
- Well, absolutely.2:36
- I mean, again, being from Limerick, Limerick is...2:37
- Limerick's got the highest rate of suicide in the country.2:40
- Limerick is still technically kind of in recession, you know?2:43
- Unemployment.2:46
- Limerick got a fair wallop after recession, and it was mainly people my own age, so the recession would have hit when I was in my early 20s.2:48
- And just half my friends went to Australia, the other half died, and the ones that didn't die were left with severe mental health issues because of lack of support2:56
- systems and the pressures of their daily life and the lack of seeing a future.3:06
- So I just found myself looking at my Facebook and Twitter one day and seeing that, like, 70 % of kind of men under 30 in the country follow us3:09
- online, and I was going, OK, well, how can I bring some...3:19
- Especially the stuff that I learned to be a psychotherapist, how can I bring that to those people, but do it in a medium that isn't intimidating, do it with3:22
- a bag on my head, do it through with a crack?3:29
- Again, my own journey.3:31
- I used to suffer unbelievable depression, anxiety, things like that, and I came out the other side of it using psychological tools, and I wouldn't mind people learning a bit3:33
- of that because a lot of it you can get through self -help.3:42
- Like what?3:44
- Cognitive behavioural therapy.3:45
- That worked for me, CBT.3:46
- If you have anxiety or depression, that you can retrain how you think, and that then will...3:48
- means you won't experience intensely unpleasurable emotions.3:56
- And that worked for me.3:59
- It sounds like you have a lot of...4:01
- care then for people who are in that situation.4:06
- Because I was able to come out of it, and because I was able to come out of that, I was like...4:10
- It wasn't even that difficult.4:15
- It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would have been.4:17
- I was in a hopeless place, but because I came out of it, I'm going, Jesus Christ, why isn't this in schools?4:19
- Why isn't this available to everyone, these tools?4:26
- So obviously you want to presatellise it once you kind of...4:28
- I don't know, like someone who goes to AA and gets off the drink, they never shut off about AA, you know?4:31
- So I'm like that now about mental health tools.4:36
- The best mental health services in the country are charities, unfortunately, you know, people like Pierre de Haas.4:39
- That shouldn't be the case.4:45
- You should be able to go to your GP, and the GP goes, here's a counsellor there, that's on your medical card, and there's no six -month waiting list, you4:47
- can get that next week.4:54
- That's the service that should exist.4:55
- And then to prevent that proactively, from the ages of about three on up, kids should be taught basic psychological tools.4:57
- Of how to understand and be resilient with emotions and stress, which we're not taught.5:04
- And the reason that this is bordering into conspiracy theory, the reason I think in our society, in Western society in general, that we're not given these tools, is because5:09
- we can't be advertised to, if we are completely mentally healthy.5:19
- Because if you think of, I don't know, Annie Brand, right?5:25
- If you think of a bar of soap, right, when was the last time you saw an ad for a bar of soap, and they're actually telling you how clean5:30
- it will get you?5:34
- They don't tell you how clean it will get you.5:35
- What they'll do is they'll show you photographs of beautiful people.5:37
- So when you buy this soap, they're trying to sell you a better version of yourself.5:40
- That only works in a population that is not emotionally aware.5:44
- When someone becomes emotionally aware, and aware of how they're feeling, then they start buying soap for how clean it gets them.5:47
- They're not going to be sold this idealised version of themselves, because they're grounded enough to know, that soap isn't going to make me a better person.5:54
- So capitalism itself relies upon populations that aren't too self -aware.6:01
- So I wonder...6:07
- That's conspiracy theory stuff now.6:08
- Let's just make smoking too many joints.6:09
- Do you know?6:12
- How did that...?6:13
- Coming up with those feelings, which are hard and overwhelming, and I think, when you talk about the world of Elman, can you talk me through discovering blind by, and6:19
- how that suddenly...6:34
- What that felt like, where you suddenly were alone, and anxious, and sad, and not enjoying life, and then after a process of a while, suddenly finding, Jesus, there's freedom6:37
- in this, and there's a platform, and there's...6:52
- Oh, Jesus, yeah.6:55
- Well, ironically, like I said, one of my issues, like, was social anxiety.6:57
- So I took putting a bag in my head to be comfortable speaking to a room full of people, do you know what I mean?7:02
- But, uh...7:08
- Mainly, I used the bag more for my own privacy.7:09
- Do you know?7:11
- I'm conscious of the fact that, like...7:12
- I just want to go to Eldian by toilet roll and not have people talk to me about horse outside, you know?7:14
- That's about it, like.7:19
- But, um...7:20
- I don't know, the bag does...7:22
- It allows me to express things that a human doesn't.7:23
- I'm a cartoon character, I'm like Homer Simpson, you know?7:27
- I don't have to account the way that a normal human would a face would.7:29
- Freedom.7:34
- Yeah, freedom, yeah.7:34
- You've beautiful eyes.7:36
- Thank you very much, Tammy.7:38
- Thank you.7:39
- No, you do.7:40
- Thank you.7:41
- And I'm struck by the level of care that you feel for people.7:41
- Again, there is a selfishness to it.7:48
- Um...7:52
- And again, this is part of my own self -awareness, it's like...7:52
- The reason I do this and try and help other people is because it helps me sleep better at night.7:56
- I go to bed going, I did something nice for somebody today, or I tried to help, therefore it helps me.8:01
- Do you mean...8:05
- When you say that, do you mean an individual, or do you mean through the fandom?8:07
- An individual, or even just putting a Facebook status up about something to do with mental health and then getting nice messages from someone saying, that thing you wrote earlier8:11
- helped me through today.8:19
- Otherwise, I go up my own hall if I'm starting thinking, oh, I'm only doing this for other people.8:21
- It's like, no, no, no, I'm...8:24
- Part of my journey of mental health is having self -compassion and compassion for other people.8:26
- So there is a degree of selfishness to it, but it's not the bad type of selfishness, but there is a self -centredness to it.8:34
- Yeah.8:41
- What are you like without having the bag?8:42
- Do you know what?8:48
- Over the years, I'm the same as I am now, to be honest, I'm not too far off, you know?8:49
- I mean, the character that I have has grown a lot over the years, but I'm a lot closer now to who I actually am.8:53
- Do you know?9:00
- I just have the bag, like I said, for privacy.9:01
- I don't want to be recognised walking down the street.9:03
- I wouldn't wish that on anybody.9:06
- I'm sure you know to crack, you know?9:08
- There's great wisdom in your mask, for sure, yeah.9:10
- And so if I met you without the mask, you'd be just a slightly calmer version of this, is that just it?9:16
- I'd be the exact same, I just wouldn't have a bag in my head.9:25
- Do you know?9:28
- In terms of...9:29
- You have beautiful eyes and a beautiful smile.9:31
- That sounds like a weird priest.9:33
- LAUGHTER That'll be you, too.9:36
- Honest of all, you do.9:39
- Thank you, thank you.9:40
- In terms of what the bandits are up to, work -wise, what's he asked?9:42
- At the moment, I just did a book.9:47
- I wrote 15 short stories called The Gospel of Cardinal the Blind Boy, because it's fiction and gospels are fiction.9:50
- And you would enjoy it, actually, because you're a fan of Flann, aren't you?9:58
- Totally, yeah.10:00
- And I'm obsessed with Flann myself, you know?10:01
- Flann was the Flann O 'Brien, the person who turned me on to...10:03
- Not comedy, but Flann O 'Brien turned me on to the Irish way of comedic thinking, you know?10:07
- So the book that I wrote is...10:13
- It would be very heavily influenced by Flann.10:15
- I can't get away from Flann.10:17
- Simply as I wasn't trying to, it's just...10:18
- He's there in my heart, my core, my creative heart is Flann O 'Brien and James Joyce, as well.10:20
- So there's the book, and you're right.10:25
- Flann O 'Brien is the godfather of us all, I think.10:27
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.10:32
- He's phenomenal.10:32
- Are you giggin' still?10:34
- We're still doing gigs, yeah.10:35
- We did Vick or Street there.10:36
- We might head over to London for a while.10:38
- I have a podcast now, as well, called The Blind Boy Podcast.10:40
- So we're just arsonin' around, doing the usual thing, you know?10:45
- I mean, the thing with our...10:48
- People are always asking us, how are you gettin' on?10:49
- I always say, like, we've been goin' for 17 years, but, like, our career trajectory can only be described as...10:51
- Ashley, you know yourself, tipping away.10:58
- That's our career trajectory.11:00
- It's never there, it's never there.11:02
- Ashley, you know yourself, tipping away.11:03
- That's our career.11:05
- I think for everybody who works in Ireland, that's their career.11:06
- Yeah, you know yourself, tipping away.11:09
- Yeah.11:11
- I wish every...11:13
- Look is the wrong word, OK, because...11:15
- If any of our lives are dependent on look, and I'm sure in some weird way they are, that's not a strong platform, but I wish every bit of strength11:19
- and power to you in your messin' and healin' over the next few years.11:30
- So fair play.11:36
- Ladies and gentlemen...11:37
- APPLAUSE .11:39
