  233. He used to live in Addis and every driver used to tell him that there's someone who never eats and drinks and that he was so curious and came all11:19

  235. She was tested in one of the biggest hospitals in Addis however, which is called Sodyto Hospital and they have testified there is no remnants of food in her intestine.11:34

  407. But we also know that it's not humanly possible to survive without food or water, let alone for 16 years.20:37

A B1 American travel narration paced for english listening practice

This clip opens Drew Binsky's investigation into a woman in rural Ethiopia who is reported not to have eaten in 16 years. The first lines set the claim, then doctors in Dubai confirm it, then the crew flies to Addis Ababa and drives for hours toward the border with South Sudan to track her down. It plays like a short documentary, not a scripted lesson, so the sentences come in the order a real trip actually happened.

Work through the opening in order rather than jumping around, since the story only makes sense that way and so does the pacing.

  • Start with lines 1 to 3, the claim about not eating and the doctors' confirmation. They are short and evenly paced, good for building up speed before the clip gets busier.
  • Take line 14, the four hour drive toward the South Sudan border. It is one long sentence with several clauses; break it at the commas before you try it whole.
