  59. Apologies.2:46
  60. As some of you may know, I took a bit of a sabbatical last year.2:47
  61. Do you mean when you shacked up with a slot of hairdresser, but then she dumped you?2:50
  62. Miss Mallon, please.2:53
  63. Raise your hand if you want to ask a question.2:55
  64. Okay, I think we should just move on.2:58
  65. The hairdresser certainly did.3:00
  66. Okay, so this is just a little exercise I like to kick off with.3:02
  67. Can you strength?3:07
  68. I want you guys to give me examples of things that Catholics and Protestants have in common.3:08
  69. And things that they don't have in common.3:14
  70. Let's start with similarities.3:16
  71. Erin, why don't you get the ball rolling?3:18
  72. Okay.3:20
  73. So we both...3:21
  74. Right.3:24
  75. So we all...3:25
  76. God, this is actually quite hard.3:28
  77. Anything at all, a small thing even.3:30
  78. Okay, so, right.3:32
  79. God, I'm actually drawing a blank here to be honest.3:37
  80. Not to worry.3:40
  81. Someone else, a similarity.3:41
  82. Yes.3:43
  83. Protestants of British and Catholics are Irish.3:43
  84. So that's actually a difference.3:45
  85. Quite a...3:48
  86. Well, quite a big difference.3:49
  87. If that's okay, we can write that down.3:51
  88. Now, back to similarities.3:55
  89. Yes.3:57
  90. Protestants are richer.3:58
  91. Okay, so that's another difference.4:00
  92. And I'm not sure that's actually...4:02
  93. I mean, is that true?4:04
  94. I would say so.4:06
  95. Yeah, I suppose that's fair enough.4:07
  96. Yes, great.4:09
  97. Off you go.4:11
  98. Catholics really buzz off statues and we don't so much.4:11
  99. I do enjoy a good statue, it has to be said.4:14
  100. So again, what we have there is a difference.4:17
  101. Oh, Protestants like to march and Catholics like to walk.4:21
  102. Okay, can we just...4:25
  103. Jenny, could you just...4:26
  104. Oh, you've already written it down, have you?4:27
  105. Great, thank you, Jenny.4:29
  106. I just want to pause and think about what's in here.4:31
  107. What about the fact that we all feel and love and hope and write this down.4:38
  108. We all cry, we all laugh, we all dream.4:46
  109. So I just want to think along those lines for a moment.4:51
  110. Okay.4:56
  111. Catholics, watch our tea.4:57
  112. Protestants love cleaning.4:59
  113. Protestants are taller.5:00
  114. Catholics have more freckles.5:01
  115. Protestants hate abba.5:02
  116. Okay, thank you.5:04
  117. Let me just rephrase slightly.5:06
  118. Can you think of anything that unites every single person in this room?5:09
  119. Is there anything that we all want for this to be over?5:19
  120. And we'll wrap it up there.5:23
  121. I'd just like to ask you a few questions.5:25
  122. Nice uniform.5:27
  123. Thank you.5:29
  124. Oh, you're welcome.5:30
  125. Well, now, Michelle.5:31
  126. Okay, sir, I would just like to state for the tape...5:32
  127. There is no tape.5:35
  128. That we are completely and totally innocent.5:36
  129. And this is a horrific miscarriage of justice.5:40
  130. Grant.5:44
  131. Excuse me?5:45
  132. Here's proper ad, girls.5:46
  133. I'm actually a boy.5:47
  134. Okay, love.5:49
  135. We've had several reports of suspicious activity on the grounds of our Lady Immaculate College this evening.5:49
  136. Following up on that lead, we discover U5 on the premises.5:57
  137. That the locks of the side door have been forced and the alarm system deactivated.6:01
  138. Now, we can't get hold of the headmistress, the one...6:07
  139. Sister George Michael.6:12
  140. George Michael?6:14
  141. But the caretaker has informed us that a substantial amount of computer equipment seems to have vanished.6:15
  142. We didn't take it.6:22
  143. What were you doing on the grounds, girls?6:23
  144. We went there too.6:26
  145. We thought that we could.6:27
  146. We were just trying to.6:29
  147. We'd break them.6:31
  148. We would like to speak to a solicitor, please.6:32
  149. All on good time.6:34
  150. For the tape, the inspector is refusing us the right of legal representation.6:35
  151. There is no tape.6:42
  152. Why can't we speak to a solicitor?6:43
  153. I didn't say you couldn't.6:44
  154. You're trying to stich us up, aren't you?6:46
  155. Why would I do that?6:48
  156. Because we're venients.6:49
  157. That is a very serious allegation, girls.6:52
  158. Are you denying that your organization is prejudiced, inspector?6:55
  159. For the tape, the inspector is refusing to answer.7:00
  160. There is no tape.7:04
  161. If your organization is in prejudice, inspector, then, oh, you won't mind telling us how many Catholic officers are serving in it at this time.7:06
  162. I think we're losing sight of who's questioning who here, girls.7:13
  163. How many?7:16
  164. Well, if you count the Jewish fellow from Balamina, three.7:21
  165. In the entire police force.7:27
  166. You have three Catholic officers, and one of those officers is a Jew.7:30
  167. Lovely fellow, by the way.7:35
  168. He is.7:36
  169. I would like to speak to our lawyer immediately.7:37
  170. Is our lawyer in?7:40
  171. I don't know.7:41
  172. Look, we're just trying to work out what happened here, girls.7:42
  173. It was Hans.7:45
  174. Hans?7:47
  175. Hans and his friend, they did it.7:47
  176. Hans?7:51
  177. You know, like Hans Christian Anderson.7:52
  178. His mother was Danish.7:54
  179. Do you think he could describe this, Hans?7:55
  180. Well, I could pick that up or sort of the line up.7:58
  181. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.8:02
  182. Jesus, but that taxi took forever so it did.8:29
  183. Oh, isn't she gorgeous?8:37
  184. Give me strength.8:41
  185. And I don't mind a bit of a breeze.8:43
  186. If any, I prefer it.8:46
  187. But Don was aggressive.8:47
  188. So it says to himself as I call him, this is no day for a do.8:50
  189. What's happening?8:54
  190. For what?8:55
  191. When the bride arrived and as I say by this stage, the wind was fierce.8:55
  192. My dad.8:59
  193. I've never heard wind like it.8:59
  194. Is this my week?9:02
  195. Howling like a band she it was.9:03
  196. Am I in hell?9:05
  197. So the pergirl, the bride now this is.9:06
  198. She arrives on the way and isn't she no sooner out of the car than she's lifted up in the air like a peper doll and blown into a floor9:09
  199. bed.9:18
  200. That's actually quite funny.9:21
  201. I can't believe we're doing this.9:24
  202. It's f***ing heartbreaking.9:25
  203. Look, Granda's had fun and noise action really, really weird.9:27
  204. She's being paranoid here.9:29
  205. It was nice to daddy.9:30
  206. Jesus.9:31
  207. Exactly.9:32
  208. And if my mask starts asking questions.9:33
  209. Your mum won't trace it back to us.9:34
  210. Are you for real?9:35
  211. She traces everything back to us.9:36
  212. She traces things we haven't even done back to us.9:37
  213. See, sure this will work.9:39
  214. This is how you get rid of drugs there.9:40
  215. I've seen good fellas like 20 times.9:42
  216. That's not the only way.9:44
  217. I watched this film once about this girl who was trying to hide drugs and what she did was she shoved them right up her.9:45
  218. I'm not sticking a scone up my whole aura.9:51
  219. I'll tell you that for nothing.9:53
  220. Okay, I'm gonna flush.9:54
  221. Go for it.9:55
  222. Is it working?9:59
  223. Close this way.10:00
  224. Is the water rising?10:03
  225. Jesus Christ, why is the water rising James?10:05
  226. Don't know that the water didn't rise in good fellas.10:07
  227. We've clogged it.10:09
  228. Who's the plunger?10:11
  229. I'm afraid I left the house without my plunger tonight, aura.10:12
  230. Hey, me two nightmares, all of us.10:15
  231. I'm not gonna get out of here.10:27

Shadow this fast Irish comedy scene from Derry Girls at C1

This clip is real english speaking practice, not a graded classroom recording: it is a compilation of chaotic moments from the sitcom Derry Girls, in an Irish accent, running through 243 lines. It opens on siblings squabbling over a stolen lipstick, a scramble not to miss a school trip, a chase for spare change, and a fake séance for a dead mother, before landing in a classroom where a teacher gets challenged mid lecture. If you want to learn english with series instead of textbook dialogue, this is what real conversational speed actually sounds like.

At 210 words per minute, faster than 70% of the catalogue, and rated C1, this is not beginner material. Lines overlap, people talk over each other, and the humour depends on timing as much as on the words themselves. That makes it good material for shadowing english speaking practice c1: once you can keep pace with lines like these, slower dialogue elsewhere feels noticeably easier.

The language in this clip: rushed gonna and rowdy turns of phrase

Three lines from the clip show what to listen for if you want to improve your english accent: how the reduction gonna flattens under pace, and how a rowdy question stacks several clauses without a breath.

  • "I'm gonna be late for bingo." Said as one rushed phrase, the gonna barely lands as its own syllable, worth looping alone before you try it inside faster dialogue.
  • "I'm gonna give them a whole fiver." The same reduction, but now buried mid sentence, so you have to keep pace on both sides of it rather than isolating it.
  • "Do you mean when you shacked up with a slot of hairdresser, but then she dumped you?" A long jab built from two clauses joined by but, delivered as a single question, testing whether you can keep the stress moving through the middle without stopping for breath.

A line by line plan for the séance and classroom scenes

Practise english speaking with this clip in the order the scenes actually happen, since the pace only makes sense scene by scene, not line by line at random, and it is good english shadowing practice precisely because the speed changes scene to scene.

  • Start with line 59, "I'm gonna be late for bingo.", and loop it until the gonna reduction stops feeling rushed.
  • Move to line 41, "I'm gonna give them a whole fiver.", and compare how the same reduction sits inside a longer sentence.
  • Take line 73, "Do you mean when you shacked up with a slot of hairdresser, but then she dumped you?", and split it into two chunks before joining them at full speed.
  • Finish on line 72, "As some of you may know, I took a bit of a sabbatical last year.", which slows right down after the séance chaos. Shadow this line calmly to end the session, since it is the easiest pace in the passage above.
