- Professor Jones told the symposium he had a new method for calculating the mass of a muon.0:00
- Five times the limit of E to the oop salon as in a person.0:07
- Ok, I'll start over.0:15
- Professor J - I haven't seen him laugh that hard since the day Leonard made that multiplication error.0:18
- Oh, oh lord, that multiplication error.0:26
- He thought he carried the one, but he didn't.0:30
- It's not funny, that mistake got published.0:34
- Please stop, I'm gonna wet myself.0:37
- Looking out at your fresh young faces, I remember when I too was deciding my academic future as a lowly graduate student.0:43
- Of course I was 14, and had already achieved more than most of you could ever hope to despite my 9 o 'clock bedtime.0:51
- Now, there may be one or two of you in this room who has what it takes to succeed in theoretical physics, although it's more likely that you will spend1:01
- your scientific careers teaching fifth graders how to make papier -mache volcanoes of baking soda lava.1:10

- Oh, good god.1:16
- In short, anyone who told you that you would someday be able to make any significant contribution to physics played a cruel trick on you, a cruel trick indeed.1:18
- Any questions?1:29
- Of course not.1:34
- Hello fastest man alive.1:36
- Wanna see me read your entire comic book?1:39
- Wanna see it again?1:43
- I'm sorry.2:04
- Something's wrong.2:05
- What do you mean?2:08
- I'm not sure.2:09
- It doesn't feel right.2:20
- I don't know what you're talking about.2:23
- Oh that, Penny did that.2:32
- I've got it!2:36
- I finally reconciled the black hole information paradox with my theory of string network condensates.2:38
- It's unbelievable!2:43
- It's paradigm altering!2:45
- And I could not have done it without you.2:46
- Oh please, I just offered a little encouragement.2:48
- Oh, there's a lot more than that.2:51
- You helped me work out the masses of all the fermions and you pumice my hammer toe.2:52
- How can I ever repay you?2:58
- Well, would you consider naming it the Cooper -Newitzky theorem?3:00
- Who's Newitzky?3:03
- I'm Newitzky.3:06
- Oh, you want me to share credit?3:08
- Uh huh.3:10
- Get out.3:12
- And the purpose of this drill is to acclimate us to the use of tools in extreme temperatures such as we will face in the Arctic Circle.3:15
- Where are your tools?3:22
- Right here.3:24
- Alright team, open up your practice kits.3:27
- As the university did not permit me to bring the actual equipment we'll be using to the Cheesecake Factory because apparently I'm ridiculous.3:30
- I provided substitutes which will exercise your fine motor skills.3:37
- Leonard, you will be doing a series of complex mathematical problems on a vintage Casio Model 1175 calculator watch I received when I won the Earth Science Medal in third3:42
- grade.3:52
- Treat it with respect.3:54
- Raj, you will be painting sideburns and a van dyke on a six inch figurine of Legolas the Elf.3:57

- It looks like we have some academic dignitaries in the audience.8:10
- Dr.8:13
- Randall from the geology department, only man who's happy when they take his work for granted.8:14
- But I'll show.8:19
- I've kid the geologists, of course, but it's only because I have no respect for the field.8:23
- Let's get serious for a moment.8:29
- Why are we all here?8:35
- Because we're scientists.8:37
- And what do scientists study?8:39
- The universe.8:42
- And what's the universe made of?8:44
- I am so glad you asked.8:46
- There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium, and hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium, and nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium.8:49

- Almost there.10:06
- Almost there.10:07
- This may seem a little odd at first, but over time you'll grow accustomed to dealing with me in this configuration.10:12
- Yeah, to be honest, I don't see much difference.10:21
- Thank you.10:24
- That's what I was going for.10:25
- Now, Leonard, tomorrow when we go to work, you'll need to allow some extra time to get me down the stairs.10:29
- For your convenience, I disassemble into four pieces.10:36
- This is ridiculous.10:41
- I'm coming to talk to you.10:42

- Alright, Koopa.11:40
- Prepare to have your heart broken.11:41
- Do I get points for that?11:47
- Alright, we gave it 45 minutes.12:09
- It's no longer funny.12:12

- The highest bounce wins the office.12:21
- You're going down, Koopa.12:23
- I don't think so, Kripke.12:25
- I bounce many a rubber ball in my day.12:26

American Accent Training with Sheldon's Fastest Lines
This clip is a good pick for english speaking practice because it never slows down for you. It is a highlight reel from The Big Bang Theory, not one continuous scene: a physics lecture to a hall of students, a lab exchange with Leonard, then Sheldon trying to talk a colleague into sharing credit on a theorem. Three different rooms, three different registers, all in the same voice.
It sits at B1 and runs at 181 words per minute, faster than most of the catalogue, so it is a real test of whether you can keep pace with an American accent at speed rather than the slowed down delivery of a textbook dialogue. Sheldon's lines are clipped and sarcastic, which forces you to hit stressed words hard and let the rest fall away, exactly what improving your english accent on natural speech requires.
The Language: English Shadowing Practice for a Fast Talker
A few lines from the opening minutes show what you are up against.
- "Please stop, I'm gonna wet myself." A short line with a reduced "gonna" that Sheldon throws away almost without stress, an easy one to shadow this line on and feel where the reduction sits.
- "Wanna see me read your entire comic book?" Two claps of stress on "see" and "comic book", with "wanna" collapsed at the front. Say it at his pace and the rhythm does most of the work for you.
- "How can I ever repay you?" A rising question with every word carrying near equal weight until "repay", where the pitch drops. Good line for practising where American intonation actually falls in a question.
- "Oh, you want me to share credit?" The stress lands on "share", and the whole line turns on that one word landing right, a small but exact target for english shadowing practice.
How to Work Through Sheldon's Best Moments Line by Line
Do not try to shadow the whole clip in one pass. Work it the way the scenes are built, in short blocks.
- Start with line 8, "Please stop, I'm gonna wet myself." It is short and the reduced form is isolated, so you can hear your own version against the original clearly.
- Move to line 18, "Wanna see me read your entire comic book?" and repeat it five times before moving on. Five repeats on one line beats one pass over the whole clip.
- Take lines 34 to 39 as a block, the theorem negotiation. Say "How can I ever repay you?" and "Oh, you want me to share credit?" back to back so the intonation shift between the two registers.
- Once those hold, run the lecture lines from the opening, numbers 9 to 14, at full speed. This is the densest stretch in the clip and the real test of whether you can speak english fluently at 181 words per minute.
- Finish by playing the whole clip once through without pausing, checking your score against the lines you drilled rather than the ones you skipped.
