- Oh, oh, yep, there it is.0:17
- I have to keep my body in shape, so no one tell my trainer this or the chiefs.0:20
- But I'm a big snacker.0:25
- I like to eat a lot of chips, candy, whatever it is, especially at nighttime, which I know is the worst part of the day to eat snacks.0:26
- I always grab either a purple bag of Doritos, which I just got on.0:34
- I used to be a cool ranch guy, but now I'm on the purple bag.0:38
- Or I grab some gummies with the Jolly Rancher gummies, greens, my favorite flavor, or Starburst.0:41

- I know there's a bunch of debate about this, but the red flavor is definitely the best.0:48
- And I like the pink too, but red, come on.0:51
- Let's end the debate.0:53
- So the next essential is definitely sunglasses.0:58
- And you know me, you know I'm rocking the Oakleys.1:01
- Let me go and throw them on for y 'all.1:03
- This style of Oakley, I've kind of felt like it's like mine.1:05
- I went to the headquarters of the Oakley studio around when I signed with them.1:09
- And this is like the first one that I picked out.1:12
- And I hadn't seen anybody really rocking them.1:14
- They kind of have that snowboarder type swag, but at the same time, I thought I could make it mine and bring it to the football world.1:16
- The athlete world kind of covers up your face a little bit.1:22
- You can be incognito, no one knows what you're thinking, no one can see your eyes.1:24
- And then the new swag that they got going with these lenses and the frames of them is something that I think I'm gonna rock a lot this season.1:29
- Obviously it means a ton to me at what I do for a living to be able to have this.1:38
- This is the pinnacle, it's what you want whenever you step on a football field, no matter if you're in Pee Wee football, high school, whatever it is, your dream1:42
- is to win the Super Bowl.1:49
- And that first one, that first one hits different.1:50
- I wear it to pretty much any big event, kind of get the stun a little bit on everybody, especially the guys that don't have them, but at the same1:52
- time, it's something that just means the most to you.1:59
- Another key essential that I always have on, definitely gotta be the Mahomes ones.2:05
- To have your own signature shoe, you're growing up and you're watching, you see Jordan, see LeBron, his, James Harden, not a lot of NFL players have their own signature2:11
- shoe.2:18
- A lot of them have cleats for Adidas to give me the opportunity to have my own signature shoe.2:19
- They let me completely help design the whole shoe.2:23
- And for me, I want them to be a lifestyle shoe, but at the same time, something that you can train in.2:25
- And obviously with me, I train all the time and I want to be able to run and cut.2:29
- Like they're high top, they're a little bit sturdier at the top here, they got a firm bottom where you can really train in.2:32
- At the same time, you can throw them on with jeans, you can walk around the house, you can go out to eat with them.2:37
- And I definitely had to bring out kind of a one of a kind.2:42
- This is actually my wedding shoe that Adidas made for me.2:44
- And you can see they got the diamonds on them, really kind of stun with the light blue, which is my wedding color.2:47
- So I'm sorry everybody, these are one of ones and no one else can get them.2:54
- Yeah, the next essential that you always gotta get, always gotta have, where did I even?2:58
- It's Brittany, my wife.3:08
- So my wife Brittany, she's the best.3:11
- She's more than my wife though, she's my best friend.3:14
- So nice of you.3:16
- No, and so she's definitely essential that I have every day and supports me every day.3:17
- I mean, personally, I don't think you could get out the house if it wasn't for me.3:22
- Wish I had a kids here too, because the whole fam, you know, we're always together wherever we go.3:25
- Yeah, and I feel like once you have kids, you're just, they're the essential to your everyday life and without them it's just weird.3:29
- Very weird.3:35
- A real important essential to me is definitely my bracelets.3:40
- And I think y 'all see it.3:44
- When I play every game, every commercial that I shoot, I always have these bracelets on.3:45
- These bracelets were given to me by kids.3:49
- There's a couple of them that aren't here anymore, but I just wanted to know that their impact is still made in my life every single day.3:51
- It's super important to me and I want them to know and their families to know that they're out there with me when I'm playing every single day or when3:56
- I'm doing whatever that is or when I'm with my family.4:02
- And it truly makes me appreciate every day that I got on this earth.4:04
- This is my newest one, it's called Battle with Aiden.4:07
- So when I met before this last season to motivate myself every day to be great for him and he's not with us anymore, but we were able to win4:09
- the Super Bowl this last season.4:15
- So I'm just so thankful for these kids and have the impact they made in my life.4:17
- Another super important essential for me is definitely my whoop.4:25
- People see me with this band on.4:29
- A lot of times in games you see me with this little band on my arm.4:30
- It kind of pokes out, especially when I wear the white undershirt.4:33
- That's how my whoop, it tracks my sleep, it tracks my physical activity throughout the day.4:36
- It tracks pretty much everything.4:40
- I look at this app every single day and I try to see how I can better myself.4:41
- And when you better your recovery and you're in the green, you have better days and you get the most out of them.4:46
- And so I just wanna make sure that I track throughout the game days, workout days, whatever it is, rest days, and try to make sure that I can do4:52
- whatever I can to have my body in the best place possible to not only play football, but just to overall general health.4:59
- The next essential, bio -steal, hydration drink, someone who works out all the time, like me, you gotta make sure you stay hydrated.5:06
- And they got so many great flavors, no sugar, one of the healthiest drink that I've had, that still tastes great.5:14
- And I think even more important than keeping me hydrated is definitely that my daughter loves bio -steal.5:20
- And so we always have it on us because if I don't want it, she's gonna want it at some point.5:26
- You always gotta keep the daughter happy.5:31
- If you know me, you know my hair, and head and shoulders is what makes my hair what it is.5:35
- It helps keep my hair not only clean, but this dangling little curls that I have.5:40
- And so it's something that I use every single day, twice a day most times.5:46
- And it keeps my hair just what it is.5:50
- No other product, no other, anything like that.5:51
- So if you're going for my haircut, make sure you get a barber to do the sides and head and shoulders on top, and you're gonna be looking just like5:53
- Pat Mahomes.5:59
- The next essential, something you have every single day, I think everybody has it, but it gotta be the cell phone.6:02
- You know, on social media, I throw a few jokes here and there.6:08
- I try to stay in tune to the fans and my friends and family and everything like that.6:11
- I mean, I see everything.6:15
- I think people notice that by the how I play the game.6:16
- As I see everything and I try to use that as fuel to go out there and be who I am.6:19
- And look at that daughter right there.6:22
- So gotta always remind what it's all about.6:24
- I appreciate y 'all having me.6:26
- Hopefully you learned a little bit more about me through my essentials.6:27
- See you on the field.6:30
American Accent Training with Patrick Mahomes's GQ Essentials Interview
This clip is a straight to camera interview, Patrick Mahomes walking through his everyday essentials for GQ. At B1 it sits in the middle of the catalogue for difficulty, but at 261 words per minute it moves faster than 97 percent of the clips here, so the value is training your ear and mouth to keep up with a native speaker who talks the way people actually talk, not scripted narration.
The subject matter helps too. He is talking about snacks, sunglasses, and what winning a Super Bowl means to him, ordinary topics with real enthusiasm behind them, which gives you natural stress and rhythm to copy instead of a flat reading voice. Practising english speaking on a clip this fast forces you to compress your own sentences the way he does, which is exactly what improves your english accent when you talk to native speakers at their normal pace.
The Reductions and Colloquial Turns in Mahomes's Own Words
In this recording Mahomes reaches for gotta seven times and gonna three times, the kind of casual reduction you will not find in a scripted lecture. Three lines worth slowing down when you shadow this line for english shadowing practice.
- "I think I'm gonna rock a lot this season." The gonna comes out almost as one syllable with I'm, so shadow the whole run together rather than gonna alone.
- "I know there's a bunch of debate about this, but the red flavor is definitely the best." Notice the stress lands on debate and best, not on the filler words around them, that is the rhythm to copy.
- "I have to keep my body in shape, so no one tell my trainer this or the chiefs." A run on, conversational sentence with no pause where a written version would put a comma, listen for where his breath actually falls.
How to Shadow This Fast Paced GQ Essentials Segment for English Speaking Practice
At 261 words per minute this clip punishes a first pass at full speed, so work it in a fixed order rather than replaying the whole thing on loop.
- Start at line 4, "This is Patrick Mahomes, and these are my essentials." It is short, clearly enunciated, and sets the pattern for the whole video.
- Move to line 9, the snack rant, and shadow it once slow, once at his pace, before moving on, it is the longest run of connected speech before the first topic change.
- Isolate line 26 and repeat gonna rock a lot this season five times on its own, then rejoin it to the full sentence.
- Finish on lines 13 and 14 together, the red versus pink debate, and try answering back in your own words once you can keep up with his.
- Once those four lines feel automatic, run the whole opening from line 1 to line 30 at full speed and check where you still lag.
